Just rewired hardware, tone and volume acting suspicious

OK I have a standard 2 hum(passive) 1 vol, 1 tone, 3 way toggle. just like http://www.seymourduncan.com/wiring-diagrams?meta_params=guitar-options,2-pickups,neck-h,bridge-h,1-volume,1-tone,3-way-toggle,accessory-none Pretty much the only difference between that diagram and my actual wiring is the ground to bridge. I don't have that. Anyway like the title says I just did some rewiring as I had some wires come loose. I wound up replacing the original pots with some larger fender pots. Anyway The volume pot for sure doesn't really change the volume, it does however add "noise". The tone knob seems to be working as advertised, although it's really hard to tell when your volume knob isn't working correctly. The output, volumewise, is fairly loud maybe 7/10 I'm wondering if I "burnt out" the pot, but I was trying to be careful with how much heat it got during soldering. I took a multimeter to it, not knowing what I was doing, and the switch is working just fine, and all the grounds seem to be solidly connected. I'm fairly certain there is a way to check the resistance of the pots as the dial gets turned, which I suppose checks the integrity of the pot but I don't know how to do it.

Anyway, If anyone has any feedback or suggestions, feel free to criticize me

Post pics, so we can see what is going on. You will need a bridge ground, too, otherwise noise will certainly be an issue. The first step is to get that volume knob wired correctly though, and that is where pics will help- we have some great wiring gurus here that can figure almost anything out.

Were they old pots, or new never used??

What s your iron wattage....it should be sufficient so that only a few seconds on the back of a pot is enough to be able to melt solder there.

As to checking the pot, slide the pot to the 10 posi where you should have max volume. The middle lug or wiper should read the full pot value to the lug you have grounded.
At zero there should be 0k resistance to the ground lug.

Is it working correctly now?

Re: Just rewired hardware, tone and volume acting suspicious

With the exception of the noise it is. So doing some light reading, it just seems I need to have a ground going away from the hardware. I do have a battery terminal from when I had active pickups. Suggest using that route for grounding?

Actually, I'd rip out any electronics I wasn't using.
