Just tried Shuguang 9th gen "silver dragon"

I got 3 of these pre tubes off the Bay for $17.85 shipped and WOW!!! They are a tad brighter than GT ECC83C's but moderately crunchier. To my ears the distortion is quite a bit smoother. In an earlier post, I was trying to get more gain out of my JSX head. These tubes brought it out BIG TIME!!! Really good pre-amp tubes for cheap. To me , the GT sounded dark but in a bad way. These have more bite on the pick attack crunch but are slightly dark on the sustain in a very good way. Highly recommended in V1 and V2. I better order some more before they're gone!!!

yeah, they're the best bargain in tubes. For highgain amps, they're the way to go. I even like them in clean amps, since they add a lot of punch and earlier breakup.

I've been preaching Shuguang 9th gen Chinese preamp tubes for a little while, glad to hear you're liking them Danglin' Fury. :) For medium to high gain amps, they just do what I want them to do.

in other amps i've tried them in they did seem to have more gain, and smoother but they seemed to lack tone. But thats just my experience

I will be the first to admit when GJ started preaching GT 12AX7-C's about 12-15 months ago, I was the first NOS snob to say those can't be better than my NOS. Well, I put my money where my mouth was and bought some. Now my Bugle Boy, Mullard and other NOS tubes are in a box for a rainy day, and my Marshall is loaded with GT-C's in the gain stages, M's in the others, JJ in the reverb slot and an M in the PI.

Great tubes for $20 a pop. I prefer the GT's because I feel they are tested to higher tolerances...and I'm ok with paying the extra for that.

how would these stack up against the tung sol 12ax7, from what ive read theyre about equal. any comments?

Re: Just tried Shuguang 9th gen "silver dragon"

I'm equally impressed with the shuguang, prolly the 1st batch ain't attractive, now they're selling like hotcakes

I use TADs because they seem to be quite anal about their testing... and they are actually cheap for that.
