Ranalli as you already know i respect your UNBIASED OPINION :)
and i agree that the JB will make any axe sound like it has a JB in it.
I dont feel the EMG stuff is anything but clear, punchy, articulate, dynamic, and just plain friggin QUIET! :)

I agree with everything but the dynamic part.

18v mod.

I find them much less compressed than the Duncan's I've tried.

among the four old horsemen: metallica, megadeth, anthrax and slayer my favourate tone is megadeth by a big margin.

i think its cool how out of the old "big four", half use duncans and half EMG. hell, i think Metallica sounded better when they used stock gibson pickups, but this is the way it stands today (and if you wanna talk in terms of present-day tone, the duncan users win by far)

can some1 explain why satriani sounds so sterile?
his pickup fred or something else?

Re: Just what is meant when you say "sterile" ???

I think this is the best technical description I've found on EMG's.. I'll say this.. They are different.. they are great in that they don't have a ton of magnatism, and therfore they don't kill sustain.. and you can put them very close to the strings to get power and sustain.. But they do impart something that sounds different from what most people are used to, because they have a preamp.. I don't see how one can say it's sterile though.. It's just different.. Tone and sound is subjective.. I have used them and will continue to when I feel they are needed.. Currently I'm on a Dimarzio Tone Zone kick.. but I also love Duncans and Rio's, etc..

I think emg and most (not all) ceramic pickups to be sterile. So for more on this lets go to kinman
It is a fact that Ferrite (Ceramic) magnets play absolutely no part in tone shaping of a guitar pickup simply because they are non-conductive, non-metal magnets and do not influence the electrical behaviour of the coil, and exchanging these with Samarium Cobalt magnets has similar sonic results; in other words these magnets are completely toneless / soundless (ie they play no part in tone shaping). On the other hand we have Alnico, the magical magnet. Alnico is unique because it imparts a TONE flavour and certain dersirable performance characteristics into the sound. It does this because it is metallic and conductive and does influence the electrical behaviour of the coil. There are those that will tell you that a clever designer of Samarium Cobalt or Ferrite magnet pickup can somehow, miraculously, compensate for the missing Alnico by clever magnetic circuit design, this is simply not so. Magnetism is just magnetism, but 'coil core' material is a whole different story. Core material and behaviour is one of the BIG subjects that old time Electrical Engineers (not the modern electronic variety of engineer) had to study during their education. You have probably heard about Inductance (measured in Henrys), it's one of the most important and revealing specifications that a guitar pickup possesses. Did you know that Inductance is primarily derived from the core material? Steel had high inductance, Alnico has low inductance, about 1/4 that of steel. Fender sound demands just the right amount of inductance derived from the core.

Re: Just what is meant when you say "sterile" ???

Dude, I not long ago watched him with Steve Vai and Yngwie on the G3 tour, and I'm not a big huge shred fan, but of the three I thought he was the best sounding to be honest.. and I didn't think he sounded sterile at all.. He was playing his Dimarzio Fred / Dimarzio PAF Joe neck pups in his custom Sabre / Ibanez guitars, thru a Peavey Custom amp and cabs.. and his Boss pedals it looked like they were anyway.. and he can play the guitar.. He can play soft, hard, loud, quiet, blues, heavy, screaming, etc.. he's got a little talent in eveyhing.. He even played the harmonica on one song that just rocked... He has a great bass player too, but I wish he'd let that other guitar player crank up that Gibson! hehe..
Yngwie was good too! He just has great tone I think, but TOO many notes as the movie Amadius said.. hehe..

My experience with EMGs is that they are perfect... but this is the problem...
If you met a person who was "perfect"... you wouldn't like that person very much. EMGs feel like they dont have imperfections...

Dude you have spoken true words of wisdom!
this is what i LOVE about them, they hide NOTHING,show all nuances
and have this PERFECT articulation
i think SLAYER said it best with thier record title "SHOW NO MERCY" :laugh2:

Re: Just what is meant when you say "sterile" ???

My only experience with EMG's was in a semi-hollow custom 7-string owned by Ron Eschete. He really loved the "clarity" of them but they just felt and sounded cold to me.

When I say "sterile", maybe a good translation is "robotic" or "lobotomized". Like the difference between a friend with a lively, witty personality and a Vulcan or an android. To me this definitely applies to EMG's and even more so to Line6 amps and their imitators.

That said, no doubt among EMG-lovers there are those who hear something in the EMG that I can't hear that they're able to exploit via their playing technique and so they may be able to make EMG's sound as good as any passive Alnico.

I don't think he sounds sterile at all. In fact I think the Fred is a very cool pickup.

Re: Just what is meant when you say "sterile" ???

I talked to a blues/jazz buddy of mine yesterday and said he has yet to find a pickup to replace EMGs in his eyes. He said what he likes is how true and clear they are. Very transparent and true to the tone of the guitar.
