Kac, I got a question for ya, bro ...

when you changed your 12ax7's for 12au7's, did you have a significant drop in volume? I'm thinking of changing my V1 and V3 and I want the ability to get louder without distorting.

thanks bro!!!

The 12AX7 generates more gain then a 12AT7 or AU7 so yeah, you'll probably experience a loss of gain when swapping them around. If memory serves the AU has less gain then an AT...

How much of a volume drop is gonna vary depending on the tube & circuit it's in.

Some of the modern starved plate designs in cheep 'toob' preamps & stompboxes from Digitech, ART, Presonus & the like don't always subscribe to that because the tubes are operating WAAAAAAY out side the normal & designed operating range... as opposed to a "real" design where it might see about +/-300 volts at the plate.

Whuddever.

You won't blow anything up by swapping them around unless the tube itself is caked so go for it!

I swapped to what i did for less gain, but I didn't do a direct before and after to see if I lost some of the overall volume. I know it's still got enough volume to play a decent sized club without being miced :) So no, not a real significant loss of volume.

Rock On ~ Kac

and by less gain I mean more clean headroom....

that's what I'm looking for too. I want to be able to turn it up more, get louder and not get distortion.
