I finally identified my vintage japanese Kawai electric guitar, thanks to the internet... My parents got it for me in the 80s when I was a kid and I still have it today, as you can see in my avatar.
The guitar is a Kawai Aquarius AQ-305. http://guitarz.blogspot.com/2010/04/kawai-aquarius-aq-305.html
Single humbucker with push button coil splitter. Alder or ash with maple neck. My headstock is the only thing different.
Here's the rest of the model line: http://kawaiguitars.com/Guitars/Aquarius/aquarius.html
here's photos of my own guitar. It now has a TV Jones Powertron and no more push button. It sounds awesome still.
