I've recently acquired a 1985 Ibanez Musician bass and when I've checked under the hood it looks like the original pups have probably been replaced (the wiring doesn't look like a factory job). So the pickups that are in are seymour duncan humbuckers kb1n and Kb1b. I can't find any info on these pups could anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance
Si

Re: KB1N and KB1B

These would be our an "Hawkbucker" Pickup that was originally designed for and used by local Santa Barbara Luthier John Hawk . For a period you could find these on some basses made by our OEM partners, we continue to make them in our custom shop

Hope they sound great, would lvoe to see some pics of the bass with the pickups loaded in and set up

Re: KB1N and KB1B

Great!

I've learned a new thing today.

Thank you, Arwin! ;)

PS: What exactly are those big screws attached to? Being a humbucker, the bobbins should be attached with the usual two "humbucker bobbin mounting screws", which there are none to be found in the picture. Plus, there's no "dimension specs" docs of any CS p'up, so I need to ask, as I don't have the possibility to see it for myself. Can you help, Arwin? Inquiring minds would like to know. :cool2:

These are cool, and I didn't really know much about them, either.

Thanks for your interest Peter!

Since the OP didn't post a picture of the pickup as viewed form playing position, I'll include one to help make sense of the unique mounting system for the bobbins.

Because the pickup uses two large blades, the blades are press fit into forbon which is fastened to the baseplate with two large screws, as viewed from the bottom of the baseplate

The bobbins used for these pickup are larger than a standard humbucker bobbin, they will generally fit most humbucker pickup cavities like you would have in an SG or LP, but they require a special mounting ring that allows the bobbins to 'clear' the ring

here are the basic dimensions for the pickup

Re: KB1N and KB1B

Well, that explains the four springs corresponding with the screws that normally fix the p'up ring to the instrument's body. So, I assume that's the chosen way to set the p'ups' height to the strings? Interesting.

Unique mounting system is one way to put it, I guess.

Anyway, thank you very much for the insightful explanation. That's exactly what's needed in an user forum like this one.

Yours very truly,

/Peter
