Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

Check this out, folks.

Now I love Duncans. We're here because of Seymour. My next guitar project that I have in mind involves Duncans exclusively...

But wowie zowie, these are exciting. Anything that Keeley puts his name on is going to sound, at the very least, very cool. If not amazing.

The first forum member to get a set of these MUST report back.

Re: Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

it's a big marketplace out there, with a lot of good winders now

I'll remain politely skeptical for now.

Re: Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

i think they are a bit pricy.

the keleey modern set is $249 vs the Seymour Duncan California 50 s Single Coil Set SSL-1 $150

Re: Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

There's not really enough info there to get excited over. Another "vintage" strat pickup. Ummm...yay? That really tells me nothing. I've heard dozens of "vintage" strat pups and they all sounded different, so I have no idea what these might sound like or what sets them apart from the other pickups on the market.

Same thing with the "Neo-Vintage" and "Modern."

Just another pickup. What's new here?

That's pretty much the truth. I've heard a lot of vintage strat pickups....all of them with very similar specs (6.3K A5) and they all sounded different.
With things like this, you're not really getting better, just different.

The only way to know what you REALLY like is to go through a bunch and stop when you hear what you want to hear.

I'm a bit skeptical of any pup with a circuit board, but that's just me...

Re: Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

I think he's just using circuit board material for his bobbins. The pickup contruction looks pretty traditional. I can't think of any reason that the choice of magnetically and electrically inert bobbin material would really have an affect on the sound of the pickup...but then, I'm sure there's someone out there convinced that if you're not using the exact material, from the exact supplier, cut with the exact machine that Leo Fender used then it's gonna sound like garbage...

I gotta give him credit, though. I like how he's done up the underside of the pickup for CLEARLY explaining exactly what model pickup you're holding. Beats the hell out of decyphering various sticker codes over the 30 year history of a company.

I'm a bit skeptical of any pup with a circuit board, but that's just me...

Why get excited? I think that if you have tried some of Keeley's other gear, and liked it, then you'll probably (like me) be excited to try these. I like his ear for tone, if you know what I mean. Same thing with Dave Barber (Barber Electronics pedals,) and Dr. Z (I forget his real name.)

I think he'll be bringing something new to the game, which is fun. Whether one likes it more or less than the other similar pickups out there... who knows!

Cheers

Re: Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

Keeley has a good rep, it's a big market, and I'm sure he'll do fine, but I still think it takes time to develop a new product line. Seymour probably did rewinds for years before developing new pickups.

I think that's how it starts with all those guys. They do things for themselves, then their friends, then they make a business out of it...

Re: Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

Wow - custom-wound pickups! Why has no one thought of this before???

Oh, wait. That's right.

Nevermind.

Re: Keeley introduces new pickups... trouble.

I happen to like 60 cycle hum. It makes me feel alive - like the guitar is taking breaths between singing.

:D
