keep sure your ground wire is working ! Death by electrocution almost got a young man

This week a french guitarist had been electrocuted because his ground wire wasn't working properly and its amp too.

he got a hearth attack he got reanimated but suffers serveral injuries...

Don't take the groud wire and eletrocution as a Myth and please don't forget to get your old amps checked.

this is not a myth as some of us do believe it :

My french is pretty basic and I doubt many other people here are much different. That article needs translating.

People get electocuted every day.

Euro power is 240 volts BTW.

In case anyone is unaware of the "death cap" it's a very common issue with tube amps. Prior to 3 prong electrical cords a capacitor was placed across the hot wire to ground to eliminate hum on some amplifiers. If the cap shorted out your chassis could carry the voltage, right up your guitar's input cord and in to the strings. This happened to Keith Relf, and right under his feet in the floor was a pipe that was well grounded. It killed him.

Death caps were in amps from the 40's, 50's & early 60's thats about it.

Yep, back when we had 2 prong cords in the U.S. I'm don't know how amps destined for other markets were done.

I don't know if it had a death cap, but my brother's '78 2203 had a 2-prong cord. One of the first things we did was convert it to a detachable 3-prong since it had already had other work done and was no longer a collector amp.

There was an Artist [famous] in the 60's killed by his PA touching a mic. Ive seen that happen in person in bands i was in. Ive also been shocked by a Marshall JMP twice, once playing barefoot on damp concrete & another by a Lightning strike. I also grounded out 460VAC 3 phase as an Engineer in the 80's but thats a different show. I don't recomend any of that.

Sounds like a good argument for going wireless.

Re: keep sure your ground wire is working ! Death by electrocution almost got a young

Back in the day one of the popular bands in my area was named Live Wire
After just that thing

The mics shocking the singer / guitarist was common everywhere
Early 80s

No obligatory AC/DC references?

And now, the national anthem for this thread topic:

I've been shocked by an early/mid 50s Tweed Deluxe, and it hurt a lot but didn't cause any permanent damage. That amp sounded great, but I'd almost rather have a modern repro with a properly grounded power cord.

I remember this room we used to rehearse in (early 2000s) with provided PA, and a couple of the mics would shock you like that. After that first time I remembered to bring my own mic and never had that problem again.

If the wiring wasn't up-to-spec, the location owner is responsible and liable if taken to court.

If somehow the AC cable of the amp had no ground connection (unlikely), the player is at fault.

My money is on the location faulty wiring. The obligation of a ground wiring in places destinated to the public dates late 70's.
