Kent Armstrong MOTHERBUCKER - Most Metal or Most Foolish...??

Just wondering what people's opinions are on this perhaps insanity perhaps metal tone goldmine....

Kent Armstrong Motherbucker Double Pickup - HOT.

Four ceramic rails with a D.C of FREAKING 27.5k!!

Now, just the sheer outlandishness output of this is tempting me to get on and pop it in the bridge of my Jackson DK2L - replacing the JB.

I realise it will sound like a rabid badger for clean passages - although with the sheer no. of wiring and coil tap configerations it could deliver a more useable tone. I'm just thinking of the sheer leaping harmonics and squeals - hopefully a la a Bill Lawrence L500XL - as they are hard to come by without importing in the UK.

Now, I'm guessing this will clip the input of my POD X3 live easy - but can adjust the input level no problem. But compared to the other single coils will there just be a HUGE volume jump when changing pickups? I might get a hotter rail humbucker in single coil housing for the neck for more fluid leads. But the sheer outlandishness of the Motherbucker is tempting me to part with my cash....

Anyone have any tone advice? Could it be Metal / Surgical low end nirvana or just a wall of mush???!!!

Re: Kent Armstrong MOTHERBUCKER - Most Metal or Most Foolish...??

I thought Mighty Mite made the MotherBucker? Same pickup?

Re: Kent Armstrong MOTHERBUCKER - Most Metal or Most Foolish...??

No idea Fusion - I know WD Music who I can buy it from also have a US Site. Apparently some tone clips in the works for pickups etc.

I might not be too expensive - and I only want to use the Motherbucker for Metal, but at the same time I do not want to waste £60 - esp as the JB is sweet - I'm just greedy for those dripping harmonics and squeals.

Good thing I can adjust the POD X3 input though - or would be screwed.

The dude from Muse uses it, if you like his tone then go for it.

Re: Kent Armstrong MOTHERBUCKER - Most Metal or Most Foolish...??

Never been one for Muse -

Was hoping it would be like a Super Charged Bill Lawrence L500XL....
Definately love to nail the harmonic squeals like old Dime - the JB is pretty darned close though tbh.

Re: Kent Armstrong MOTHERBUCKER - Most Metal or Most Foolish...??

MightyMite did make a Motherbucker - triple-coil humbucker (3 coils wide). This appears to be a pair of Hot Rails on one baseplate. 8-conductor wiring - each coil/stack has 4 wires - so it's basically just 2 Hot Rails on a single baseplate.

That's the new one. The original was 3-coils-wide. It required substantial routing to the body, of course, unless you had a Strat with a swimming pool.

i would do such naughty things with that pickup.

i would love it in like a Strat that had hot rails in the neck and bridge. style.

IMO, there's only so much usuable output you can get out of a passive before it turns to mud and mush. If you take a monster like a Dimarzio X2N or Duncan Invader and add a pre amp, that's a whole different story

Which is basically what the Livewire Metal is

Teddybear,

Is that yours?

If so, how did it sound - and it might be the angle of the photo - but that pickup ring looks mighty meaty - was hoping it would be a straight drop in for the JB Bridge if I had gone for one...

I've got a couple of pairs of the Mighty Mite Motherbuckers, surprisingly decent pickups, they clean up well with the volume rolled back and they do make the amp snarl.
