Kiesel (Carvin) Guitars now use 6-pole bobbins and still in double cream

Just got this in the mail, literally first thing I noticed was that they used 6-poles per bobbin in double cream and naturally my thoughts came back to the infamous trademark.

Are they allowed to do this since the pickup is a part of their product instead of the entirety of their product and not sold separately?

P.S. please let's keep this civil, this is an honest question, not invitation to a bash-fest! :)

I don't know the answer to this, but I've asked- I saw it too. To be honest, I don't think a lot of younger guitarists 'get' the double cream thing, since they didn't grow up with it in iconic guitars of their youth (like many of us). But this is just what I've observed. I am sure there is still a market, but changing tastes over the years have lessened the desirability.
So, forum members, is double cream still a thing?

True, in fact I can't even remember the last time I saw a DMZ pu in double cream, 90% were all-black, 5% were zebra and 5% were something different/unique like double chrome or crazy neon colors. No double creams. At. All.

I love double cream pickups and I long for a set for my white Les Paul but I want Duncans..

Re: Kiesel (Carvin) Guitars now use 6-pole bobbins and still in double cream

I hybridize my own double creams. SO yeah... it is still a thing.

Re: Kiesel (Carvin) Guitars now use 6-pole bobbins and still in double cream

Yeah I still want double cream

Not for me. But, that bobbin colors could be patented always seemed absurd to me. Saw some double creams on ebay a while back ... older Gotohs I think. Also some asia made off brands once in a while. Come to think of it, haven't noticed many DMZ double creams either lately. Wonder when the patent runs out ...

it's not a patent, it's a trademark. and you can TRADEMARK colors. DMZ trademarked this color, if you like it or not. For example, T-Mobile trademarked magenta (at least, here in the Netherlands and as far as I know, only in the telecom-market).

DMZ's trademark is by the way only valid in the USA.

I'd buy a double cream whole lotta bridge, absolutely. maybe even a set....sans logo.

As 70s and early 80s guitar rock and gear comes back into vogue...i.e. with the now "collectible" norlin and late CBS era Fenders and other period gear becoming desirable..... I think double creams will get more popular outside the vintage crowd again.

i still like double cream but im not the demographic on the upswing

Hopefully their idea is to have it challenged and then shoot it down.

Color trademarks are a real thing but they didn't intent them to cover parts of things. Establishing the trademark in the first place was also questionable. Yes I know SD tried to poke at it once and has been told it was real enough but I can't wait for the re-run.

Re: Kiesel (Carvin) Guitars now use 6-pole bobbins and still in double cream

The thing with Dimarzio is that their cream color is yuck IMO. It doesn't really seem to match the cream color the old Bursts had from what I can tell. With that said, I haven't read the patent, does it specify exact color codes? Why can't somebody create a color different from Dimarzio (and more similar to the old Gibson bobbin color) and just call it something different like "vintage white"?

How did you determine that?

There's a different shade of cream on every DiMarzio product I get :)

True, but seems like most I've seen are too fleshy-colored, or yellow-ish.....just not pleasing to my eyes as compared to the old Gibson cream color.

Whatever the case, it seems their cream color variation just further weakens the "trademark". If they can't even consistently produce a certain color, then what good is the trademark?

I love double creams! My Les Paul has a C5 bridge and PG neck from the days when we could order DC hidden under unsoldered nickel covers. Whenever I want DC Duncans now I just buy a no logo zebra and no logo reverse zebra and swap the bobbins.

I couldn't care less what color they are, or configuration, as long as they sound good to me.

I like the look. I would like to have the option of picking whichever color I want.

The easiest way is to just go with some larrypups
