Last time I spoke with Bill Finigan the wait was no where near 2 years...it was too long which is why I opted for the Cold Fusion but it wasn't 2 years...

If you want it quick and for less cash grab a Cold Fusio...killer unit, trust me!

Re: Klon Centaur

TGWIF......you off today?

I got a Cold Fusion in a trade. GREAT pedal, but it doesn't get along with my Tophat King Royale & it's size is keeping it off my board.... :dunno:

I've been hanging on to it to see if another trade might come along, but if you'd like to try it out, I'll send it up to ya' Greg.

Re: Klon Centaur

I think Joneser has one and he raves about it.

For awhile I was going between the Klon and the ZenDrive. The pseudo-Dumble tones that I heard from the Zen was enough to convince me. Although I will admit to wondering really about the Klon.

Unfortunately, Alf stopped taking orders for the ZenDrive so if you end up really liking the Zen then you're going to have to pay close to what the Klon's are going for.

Re: Klon Centaur

Hey Skarey, which Zen do you have...the older small one or the newer & bigger tube driven deal?

I was actually on the list for the new one. By the time my number came up, I had just bought the SD Twin Tube, FD II Mos, & got a Plexitone in a trade deal, so I declined the build. :smack:

I opted for the smaller one without tubes and I'm very happy with it. It took him awhile to get it to me; IIRC It was almost five months. However it was totally worth it. Great sounding pedal and damned versatile.

Re: Klon Centaur

I've been wanting a smaller Zen & Mos for a while now.....they never seem to pop up when I have the dough though & they go very quickly ! :dunno:

Re: Klon Centaur

In the 90's, the hype was just beginning, because of all the people that said it was the most perfect OD ever made. I saw a mint original gold w/centaur pic version pop up in the recycler.com for $240 firm. I sped to the guy's house and picked it up, along with original box/manual. It was the most I'd ever paid for a pedal, but I knew it was worth it.

I've had mine since 99, and there's not any OD I like better. I like a lot of other OD's for the things they do, but the Klon is a secret weapon. It's a natural sounding extension of any amp you put it in front of. What makes it better than others is the 'power-tubey' feel it has under your fingers. It's almost the same thing that a tube mic preamp does to a microphone. It enriches it and makes it sound more lively.

Now, I'm just blown away by the prices the old gold ones are fetching. I actually saw one sell on Ebay a couple months ago for $760!!! There's one now for $700. It doesn't matter to me, because it's one of those pieces of gear I'll never sell. I'm lucky to have found one....especially for the price I got it for.

Re: Klon Centaur

It's an interesting coincidence that this thread should come up today. I just got off the phone with Bill Finnegan (maker of the Klon Centaur) yesterday and placed my order for one this morning.

The wait time is 10-12 weeks, which I have the patience for. I knew I had to get one when I tried another guy's during a gig a couple years ago. It made my Super Reverb sound amazing, and it wasn't even doing its best.

I've got a Celtic amp coming in a couple months, and after speaking with Bill Finnegan, he's quite sure the Centaur is going to sound unreal with this amp. (Then again, based on what I told Bill, he's sure the amp will sound amazing on its own.)

If the amp and pedal arrive on my doorstep the same day, I'll run around the neighborhood like a freakin' lunatic!

Re: Klon Centaur

Hey Keith...if you don't mind me asking...how much is Finnegan selling them for nowadays?

I can't even believe people would pay $700, when a new silver one is roughly half that amount.

Re: Klon Centaur

I have a Klon Centaur.

I got mine in 10 weeks.

There are two things I really like about the pedal. # 1 with the gain turned way down, the pedal acts like a mic preamp in that it makes your exisitng sound bigger and fuller, more 3D like, with out changing the original tone in any way. # 2 with the gain turned way up and the output turned way down, I get a beautiful distortion that still maintains the sound of the notes verses just distoriton.

I really like pedal.

Hey Joe,

His operation is in Cambridge, MA, so I have to pay sales tax. Not including that, it's $337:
  • $329 for the pedal
  • $3 for the cord
  • $5 for shipping

Re: Klon Centaur

I ordered one on 9/1/06 and have not received it yet. I paid like $325 or so.

We're kinda on week 12 at this point. I'm in now rush. Hey, as slow as I am, I understand these things.

Keith, I hope to get mine before I'm ready to ship your amp. I'll let you know how it sounds. . bwahahahhaa! :)

I don't know whether to be excited that you can tell me how the combination sounds ahead of time, or jealous because you'll hear it before me. :)

P.S. Got your phone message. It was breaking up a bit, but sounded mostly like good news. I saved the message, so I'll try to listen to it again.

Re: Klon Centaur

+1.

I've always been very curious about the Klons, but never tried or played one. For the price, that's probably best though!

The thing about buying something like a ZenDrive or a Klon is that if it just doesn't work out for you then you can turn around and unload it for a profit.

The other upside is that they just seem to have something over the mass-produced overdrives. In all honsety, had I gotten my ZenDrive a year or two before I did I probably would own half as many OD pedals as I do now.

I didn't know Klon was local though....that's kinda cool!
