Klon vs Soul Food

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

I've had a Rawkworks Light OD for a while and it was killer. I just sold it because I needed a 1590a sized klon, which I found in the Tone City Bad Horse. I'm excited to get it in and try it out.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

The Klon KTR is the same pedal I believe. I guess in that sense the Centaur is out of production.

Circuit wise, it's (supposed to be) the same, but it is made with SMD parts. And from a collector's standpoint, it's ugly as hell compared to the Centaur. That's why you can get them for a few hundred instead of a few thousand like the Centaur.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

Comparing a mass produced $60 pedal to a handmade, collectible, out of production pedal that can fetch thousands of dollars and saying that there's not $1800 worth of a difference is pretty stupid. I mean it's not wrong, but it misses the point completely.

Anybody who buys a real Centaur for the tone is doing it wrong.
As such, I have no use for a real Centaur. I buy things for tone, not to make TGPers jealous of me.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

My Soul Food gets just that tiny bit closer. Germanium diodes with the right ratings made the last little bit of difference. I think the Klon is the perfect D-bag accessory.

Not picking on you, but this phrase is amazing. 10 years ago, prescious few guitarists had played (or maybe even heard) a Klon, and now it's on the level of a Tube Screamer, Fuzz Face, Big Muff or DS1/Dist +. Definitely "the pedal" of the 2010's.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

Absolutely. And to be honest, I didn't NEED a 1590a klon. I've just had one for a few years and I'm quite familiar with the circuit and how it works with my rigs. I could have gone on a quest to find a different mini pedal that would fit my needs (perhaps something like an RC booster) but I decided to stick with what I know.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

that thing looks cool. Wonder if there is a difference between the gold one on their site and the silver one? One is called an IKON and the other is called an overdrive but the description is the same. 20 bucks difference....

So many versions, so many descriptions... Just making me confused.

I, frankly, get tired of that kinda stuff and go back to my Timmy which delivers you know. But then again, sometimes curiosity is taking over and...

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

the ikon is an archer that claims to have the same diodes as the original klon. they were not only secret, but supply ran out causing the klon to stop being made. the original archer is supposed to sound great. I assume it's like on the mythical overdrive where you have a choice of diodes to choose from when ordering.

The geeks at proguitarshop got together with the Jrockett people and came up with a total copy. The designer of the Klon Centaur went to these Jrockett people with the original circuit. A few years later, they released the circuit as the "archer" pedal.

Proguitarshop put in a little extra time with the cap values and now it is supposedly perfect...whatever that means.

I like my Lovepedal Kanjis just fine. The white one is nice and creamy and the black one is whatever you want it to be. I also have the JerseyGirl Fulltender which just really works well with Boogies.

My goto overdrive will always be the Maxon OD 820.

I'm a huge proponent of owning the things you want to own though and living this one life as happily as possible. If a $1500.00 overdrive gets you there then enjoy in good health.

Are you sure Bill ran out of diodes? I ask because the ones that were in the KTR are supposed to be the same ones in the Centaur. I heard he stopped production of the original because it was a grueling and arduous process, not because he ran out of diodes.

hmm you may be right. the diodes were nos and haven't been made in a while, but thats not why he stopped making the klon. not sure why i wrote that, i just woke up!

Cool mysteries...

Way back like 2 or 3 years ago, PGS was promoting Lovepedal's Kalamazoo as a competitior of Kon

Smackdown!

:scratchch

That's what's they were calling it.

So I am not sure whether or not I trust their descriptions with fancy and marketing induced words.

Re: Klon vs Soul Food

Maybe someone has already eluded to this, but do we compare a Ferrari Daytona to a 454 Chevelle by watching a YouTube video?

I think you get my point. ;)

(You need to listen for yourself . . . in real time.)

i agree. and as someone who has a/b'ed them these videos really do the klon a disservice. the difference in real time is very noticable, not just in tone, but in fell and response from the amp.
