Kluson Tuners Modern versus Vintage.

Hi all, I am in the process of doing some Guitar mods and was wondering about tuners. I know that Grover Tuners area decent amount heavier then a vintage style Kluson set but, What about a 19:1 ratio non-locking modern Kluson set (with the Collar and screw in Bushing? Would theses sound much different than a Vintage Kluson set? Enquiring minds want to know.

Here are pics of the guitar in question. Yes I tend to go for the more highly figured stuff. :8:

Re: Kluson Tuners Modern versus Vintage.

I have Grovers with sperzel style rear wheel center pin locking mechanism
and top cap style locking mechanism

also have Gotoh Kluson style with the top locking tuners

they all work well
the top lockers were a learning curve but work just as well

the added weight at the headstock may make a difference to some
but not to me

Re: Kluson Tuners Modern versus Vintage.

Well, I am so used to locking tuners (any type, really) that it is hard to go back to vintage ones. If weight is an issue, the vintage ones might be the only choice. But modern ones, with their higher ratios, will be more accurate.

I was thinking that the Kluson Revolution would strike a balance between the tone of a lightweight tuner and the functionality of a modern tuner. Especially if you consider you can have them modded to be very similar to a PRS Phase II locking tuner, which won't add much weight and gives you the advantage of a top locking tuner.

my Gotoh Kluson style lockers look and weigh the same as the vintage Gibson/Epi tuners
but have the top locking mechanism
search on Gotoh SD90

I've heard good things about them, but have not tried them yet. If you do go with them, report back!
