Kluson Vintage Style Locking Tuners

Just installed em' on my LP Standard. Verdict......love em. Same footprint as the vintage Kluson's. Slipped right in...even came with ferruls to retro fit if you had reamed your holes out to 10mm. It took me a minute to figure out how the locing mechanism worked, but once I figured it out it was simple.

They have a slotted top like a flathead screwdriver would fit into, so I thought you tightened it down on the strings and then tuned to pitch....wrong. They work just like the Grover locking mechanism...just insert the string, turn the tuning key until it locks down on the string and tune to pitch.

I don't think they're 18:1 like the Grovers...nowhere can I find the ratio. I bought these off eBay....$50. WD wants $90. These came in an Allparts package, so I'm going to check the site to see what they are retail.

Thumbs up....no more cornea gouges for me chnaging strings.

Oh...also installed the Stewmac featherweight aluminum tailpiece and tonepros locking ABR-1. All I have to do no is get the saddles notched and I'm done.

Bump. This is a good alternative for those of you with Les Pauls who want locking tuners, but don't want to drill extra holes, or ream out your pegholes.

Bought this pair on eBay, but WD carries them, as does Allparts. My set came in an Allparts package.

i like the firm feel and low gear ratio of vintage style tuners. they feel alot firmer than the newer type ones.

I tell you what, locking style tuners would get my strings changed more often on my LP's :laugh2:

I have to say though that the Gibson Deluxe tuners on my new LP are far better than the ones they were using for the last few years. These are apparently made by Gotoh for Gibson and they hold up much, much better and feel far more solid. I wouldn't mind trrying locking ones on it though and maybe I'd even put a vintage style tuner back on my Special.

I did a little research, and the one's allparts sells are made by Gotoh, and are 15:1 ratio. Not too bad. Do I like them as well as I like my locking Grovers....no. Do I like them better than the standard Klusons on Les Pauls....hell yes. They feel tighter and more solid. The only thing that makes them visually different is the posts are slightly shorter, and there is a slot in the top of the post. Otherwise....identical.

Definately worth a try for those of you who are lazy about changing strings like I am.

I've always like Kluson tuners because they allow the headstock to resonate better than ones with heavy steel hardware. I've heard about these, but my goldtop has the exact fitting Schaller Kluson copy. They seem tighter and have a better ratio, so they stay in tune perfect. I always have an easy time keeping Klusons in tune, since the rest of the guitars are setup and intonated perfectly.

the locking Klusons are made by Gotoh, and are ver good keys IMO...you can also get them for a Strat/Tele, I will be getting a set (or 2) for some Fenders...I put a set on a Tele with a Bigsby for a buddy of mine not too long ago, and I thought they were great! AllPArts has the ones for a Gibson and we got the Fender ones from Stew-Mac.

I've got these tuners on my strat and I couldn't be happier. Excellent locking mechanism, easy to use and stable in use. They keep the vintage look on your axe too.
