Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

My rosewood board was decent. But those p-100's sucked! I think I read here? that if you split them they are killer...

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

I've heard different stories.

In short, I don't know. I didn't have either in mine.

And in looking at that pic again, on my home monitor (instead of the crappy work one), you can see a lot more checking than I first thought. Very cool, IMO!

You a checking fan Keith?

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

I'm not necessarily a lover or hater of checking. If the guitar sounds and feels good, everything else falls into place.

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

I know mine had P-100's. Who do you trust? Me, or Gibson....

Hey, give'm a listen. If you like them, bonus. Gibson P-90's are really good IMO. If not, you know where to get them replaced!

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

They were nothing more than a Studio with a "Gem Inspired" finish and P-90's. They are the same quality of a mid 90's Studio since they are the same guitar...FWIW, one of the best playing and sounding P-90 LP's I ever played short of old wood was a Gem...it had all the things I look for in a killer LP, however when I tried to find another one a few years later I had such bad luck I stopped looking!
I'm going to try and get one at an estate auction this weekend. I hope to get it for cheap!

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

Is it safe to assume that, like other Gibby LP Studios, the quality varies from guitar to guitar? The one I'm looking at isn't something I could play ahead of time.

I've had 2 Gibson LP Studios, both were amazing guitars that didn't have any of the "internet bash Gibson" problems.

It's not likely that you'll get a "dog" LP. Most are very good. Ask plenty of questions up front & get some close-up pics. I buy a bunch of guitars online (mid-price imports) and have had very few problems.

An LP with P-90's is a very nice guitar, and not a combination seen often, except in that awful gold color. I'd grab this one if it's in good condition at a good price.

+1 To this!

Gordon Bennett!

When this thread was fresh, Acebob was only forty years old.

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

Bought this one owner Gem about 5 years ago from the dealer that originally sold it. It was made by the Gibson custom shop. He said that his father would get listings from the Custom shop supervisor of instruments the shop had for sale. This Gem was one of those guitars. It is an awesome playing and sounding guitar. As to the finish and workmanship, except for some wear marks, it is flawless. Were all of the Gems made by the Custom shop - don't really know.

Would I get another Sapphire Gem? Yes.

What is the neck like on one of those? I have a chance to buy one, but I am funny about necks... Bigger the better.

Studios and Standards from the 90s through 2001 have their 'old' 50s neck which is slightly thicker than the 2002 and later 50s neck. It isn't as fat as an R7/R8 or my 335 Fatneck, but still pretty large.

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

I've got a... '98(?) Studio (the year after they discontinued the Gem series, but still had the paint left over), and I love the neck. Very comfortable.

Re: Know Anything About LP Studio Gem Series?

Fresh pics. I added the Black guard and top hat knobs etc. Kinda 60's Strat vibe.

Vintge B in neck, Custom N in Bridge.
