Korina... Closer to Mahogony or Alder?

I've been told by some people it's closer to Mahogony, but by others that it's closer to Alder. I've seen on the SD website that it's closer to Mahogony in the FAQ, but I'm still unsure.

Any information would be greatly appreciated, and I thank anybody who can provide information in advance.

I always thought of it as a more expensive, slightly better mahogany, but maybe there are other here with experience that feel differently?

Much closer to mahogany. Very close in tone and appearence. Also Known
as Limba. It has a tight straight grain and is pourus like mahogany.

Awesome, thanks. Now I know for sure what kind of pups I can use; brighter ones.

I had a reissue Gibson V in Korina-- far more porous that mahogany to the point of an uneven finish in the wood due to pits. Now that it has been brought up, it did respond like alder, and just never had that classic Gibson warm mahogany tone. Very percussive, though.

I had a Robin Machete in Korina that I thought responded more like Alder than mahogany... But then again I havent ever had a neck through body guitar with alder so my perception might be off...

Very similar to mahogany, a little brighter, and some would say a little more musical.

I own all three woods, and I would definitely say Korina is like a sweeter-sounding, more woody Mahogany. My favorite!

Korina is a finish that Gibson uses on a wood called Limba... ican NOT stress this enough! And to answer your question Limba wood sounds NOTHING like alder. It is aweeter, more musical, open, airy, sounding mahogany.

I'm sorry, but I kind of doubt your epi is made of Korina. I believe that Korina is a name of a finish for other than really expensive gibsons. Or then they just have a korina veneer on top of something else.

I think TC hit the nail dead-on the head! The only thing I find similar to Alder about Korina is the weight, it's relatively lighter than mahogany

Yeah Epi uses Korina veneer on mahogany bodies. I myself wouldn't know how they'd be able to offer Korina guitars for such a price if it were real

I HATE to step on toes hear, but since someone else said it, here is the thing (this is also in a post I made aobut 6-8 weeks ago). For the Epiphone V's Explorers, Moderne's and the handfull of "Korina" SG's this is what you get, they are mahogany, which is bleached (to make the mahogany look more like Limba) then finished in "Korina". Seeing that Korina is just a finish it is not a lie...the guitars ARE, just not Limba. So they sound pretty good, just not as good as they would sound were they real limba wood.

I can't say anything about EPIs because I haven't sawn one in two.

Alder and limba has pretty different tonal characteristics: alder is a middy-bright wood, limba has darker sound but not as dark as mahogany. Imagine a more beautiful sounding mahogany than mahongany itself. That is limba. AFAIN (I've heard here): "korina" means the special yellow-tint painting method was used on limba based Gibson designer axes (V, Explorer) at the times that were under the command of McCarthy.
