Krank, Mesa, or Splawn???

Re: Krank, Mesa, or Splawn???

Not that I dislike metal (it's actually my favorite kind o' music), and not that I want/need to defend Krank's name, but c'mon: we're talking about amps that are typically used for a genre whose bands are named after things like slaughtering fetuses with lyrics written by guys having the mentalities of 8 year-olds obsessed with blood, darkness, and satan.

Honestly, I'm convinced that 90% of the bad rap KRANK gets is due to its image. The constant use of K's, the chrome grilles, etc.

I admit. Yes. Its silly. But underneath that silly exterior is an amp that is on the same level as a mesa/boogie, or a marshall, or anything else in its price range.

Re: Krank, Mesa, or Splawn???

I actually used to have a peavy 6505+, but I really couldnt find a tone I liked. When I moved Into the dorms I got rid of it and went to my current setup. So I think Im going to shy away from the Peavey tone. I cant seem to find a tone clip for the Mesa, but the krank tones really seem to stand out, and I e-mailed the tech from Krank last night and he said that the krankenstein has a "master" master volume switch on it that allows you to turn down to lower levels while running the other ones hot. As far as the splawns from what I can tell they have a vey nice tone, but a much higher pricetag, and im only concerned that I cant actually play it before I order it. I think Im gunna have to do what a couple of you said, and for now just go play everything I can find here locally, then goto the closest Guitar Center I can find and play everything there. Thanks again everyone for your help.

Re: Krank, Mesa, or Splawn???

just because an amp has a half power switch doesn't mean that the volume drops by 1/2 when you use it...going from 100 watts to 50 watts only lowers the volume by 3 decibels...thats' it

Re: Krank, Mesa, or Splawn???

You could also try out the Randall V2/T2...

You can always get a good sound from a Dual Rectifier, the 6505 is good too but I've never used a Krank or Splawn. A guy in my friend's band has a Krank Revolution and he thinks it's "boring" compared to his triple rectifier.

Also, while not having as much gain as those other amps, Musiciansfriend is selling the Ashdown Fallen Angel stuff for pretty cheaply and they're good amps, I like mine so far...it could use more gain to use at lower volume but once you crank it up it sounds pretty sick, they have a freaking crazy amount of bass too, lol.

Re: Krank, Mesa, or Splawn???

I still wouldn't throw Peavey out the window just because you don't like the 6505+/5150 II tone. That's a poor amp to base an opinion about a company on... lol. The 6505/5150 even sounds better than that in my opinion, and the Triple X is even smoother and a cooler sound too. If you can, try out a Triple X.
