KT66 advice? (Tweaker 15)

Hi guys,

Anyone have experience with KT66's in a Tweaker 15? What models should I go with? Main concerns are that they fit and don't burn up the power transformer. Thank you.

No experience with the Tweeker, but if it can run EL34s then the power transformer can handle the heater current of KT-66s (EL34= 1.4 amps, KT-66=1.3 amps). The Tung-sol KT-66 has the same current draw as a 6L6GC in case it can't. The Tung -Sol is also only the size of a KT-88. The JJ is also physically smaller than the typical KT-66 The Gold Lions and the Shuaguns, including Valve Arts, are huge like the originals.

Thanks for the feedback - I've also read that I may need to insulate the metal base if I have the "bear trap" tube retainer clips, so it doesn't ground to the chassis....

If it serves of any reference, I've had EHX 6CA7 power tubes for 2 years in my Tweaker 15 head - hasn't blown up yet and the tone difference when pushed is TREMENDOUS over the stock 6V6 power tubes.
Try those KT66! What kind of tones are you after?

I just remove those bear trap retainers. They won't really fit over a KT66 base anyway.

Yup KT-66s for that.

I just read on an old post on Rig Talk or something like that, were Bruce seemed to be dissuading people from using EL34s because of the current draw on the 15 watt version if it seems to run hot. In that case the Tung Sol version would be a safer bet. If you can't find those then the 5881 might be a closer lower current draw alternative. However, Diego has been using 6CA7s without problem and they pull EL34 current.

They do run hot as **** though. I tried refitting the 6V6 but I think they're damaged.

Did you ask Bruce if that amp will handle those tubes.?
I assume the bias will be Way Off.......:dunno:

I emailed Egnater and they said to use the stock tubes. [emoji13]

I went ahead and filled out the customer service request form to see what tubes they recommend. Previously, I contact their info dept.

I have a set of RCA grey plate 6v6's in the one at the shop. Been in there for a few years now, sounds really good

They replied with the same thing: use the stock tubes [emoji13]

So I contacted a seller on eBay and he said these draw 1.0 amps and are a tad over 3 inches. They'll be here Monday:

I thought one of the points of the Tweaker was the ability to swap tubes..??? I put El34s in mine for awhile before I sold it. Liked the tone more! Just had to leave off the grill on the top due to clearance..

Correct. The tubes poke through the top of the head.
