kt77s?

do kt77s give a british sound. i plan on buying a jj intergrated set with those and some e34ls from eurotubes for my nomad. i just wanted to make sure. from what i hear they're a "super el34"

also: what tubes could i use in the pre to give me some more headroom? i contacted eurotubes and they said ecc803s in v1 might clean it up and give it a bit more of a vintage feel. i'm contacting you guys because i want to hear some opinions on other brands. i don't want anything that will break the bank.

right now i can't tell what the pre tubes are 'cause they're in a silver metal case

Re: kt77s?

I'm going to give you an honest stab at this for you since no one else has yet?

KT stands for "kinkless tetrode" and was built as a more robust and reliable/stable tube.

The KT 77 was the tubes that Clapton supposedly had in his Bluesbreaker Marshall amp or they were the KT 66s? Either the Genelex or Gold Lion brand..They are british sounding and even though I've never used these tubes,I get the feeling that they were rounder sounding, with more headroom and on the lines of a 6L6...Please correct me someone if I'm off base...

The JJ 803 has been touted as a higher gain tube....I was thinking more on the lines of a 12AX7 WA sovtek if you want a cleaner tube for V1.....Your headroom though,is a combination of both preamp tubes, output tubes, and speakers, plus the output of your guitar..

If you guys feel I'm wrong, please do correct me,but I'm usually pretty close...I'm only a EL34/6L6 guy for the most part and 1 amp has EL84s...

Re: kt77s?

so does anyone know if the kt77s give the el34 "crunch"

what would some good mid gain pre-tubes be?

You may end up having to buy them and pass on your findings to us? Alot of us stick with EL34s....I've read some reviews about the new KT tubes and most have been that they are ok,but nothing spectacular? I've read about words like "sterile" and "lifeless" and it's the reason I myself haven't bought any...

You may have to just try them and see what happens? Go to Plexi Palace or Metro Amps and do a search under "KT 77 tubes"...

Re: kt77s?

I've read some VERY nice reviews about JJ KT77's (user reviews as well as those from guitar mags).. As Stratdeluxer has said, they're mixture of 6L6s (low and high end) and EL34s (heavy, crunchy mids).. I've recently considered buying a matched quad from Bob because I'm a EL34 guy but want to be slightly closer to Fender sound @ cleans :D I think that's how it works :D

Stratdeluxer, I think that ECC803s are actually lower gain tubes than ECC83Ss, they're meant to give you kind of vintage vibe.. That's written on Eurotubes.com, I have no experience though

Re: kt77s?

KT 77 is a higher quality ruggedized version of an EL34---so a little more headroom, greater fidelity, more robust construction, longer service life. The new JJ KT 77 has a little problem; the pins are slightly larger than normal and spread the contacts in the sockets so that normal size pins on other tubes don't make good contact; shorts, arcing, tubes fall out, etc. If you wanted to switch tubes at some point, you may have to retension the sockets. This has been a problem with the GT KT 66 as well. I would wait till they get this bug sorted out till I bought a pair. If you wanted to try KT66 ala Bluesbreaker, the Chinese versions are a little better sounding to me than the GT version...

Thanks for the corrections. As I said,I'm not really all that up on the new KT tubes, though I have read some reviews from others on some forums...

The 803 is a Telefunken wanna be right?

Thanks for the warning!!, I'll certainly wait for them to fix the bug, don't want to risk my sunshine's sockets :laugh2:

Re: kt77s?

Regarding a lower gain tube for V1, I put in a JJ 832 and that may be what you're looking for. It's part of the Blues kit at eurotubes. In my case, my amp has plenty of gain and I wanted to lower it and also make the lead boost function more useable (less muddy) and it definitely did the trick. It just slighly lowers the gain - nothing drastic.

Re: kt77s?

will you still get a nice crunch like an el34?

if not I'm thinking about just getting the el34s straight up. then maybe later i'll test out the kt77s when they get that bug fixed like es350 said.

If you're going to buy JJ's, pick EL34L's rather than common ones.. :D That's just my opinion though:D

I love the GT EL34Ls....Same tubes maybe? 30 watt plate dissipation..

el34
or
e34l?

edit: what does red/blue glass do?

Re: kt77s?

The KT66 Genelex Golden Lion were what are refered to as the "milkshake" sound. They had better headroom than el34's but had the same hard clipping as the 6L6. They had a better frequency range and more output which drove speakers hard. According to legend Hendrix, Clapton, Robin Trower and Rory Gallagher all used marshalls with KT66's.

Great info!

Re: kt77s?

alright are you talking about the E34Ls or the EL34s?
i don't see any el34ls

edit: i can't justify paying close to 120 dollars for tubes
