L.P. Quick Connect Wiring Question

So I bought myself a new Epi. L.P. the other day (mostly because it was almost 1/2 off on clearance) & as expected the pickups suck & the frets felt like razors! I went ahead & ordered some pickups, I decided to go with Duncan Custom Floor pickups because I wanted black and white zebra bobbins & a 4 wire lead with my 59N. I settled on a SH-5/SH-1 59N set, originally I was just going to stick with a 59 in the bridge as well but my dealer only had reverse zebra in black and white, plus I think I'd rather have the added output in the bridge?

I spent the past few days getting the neck & intonation in order. The neck was straight enough but those frets were terrible! I knocked down the rough edges and polished each of them with some steel wool. It's much easier to play now but them pickups are still there so I checked the status of the puppies and they'll be here tomorrow! So just for turds & squirts I went & opened up the backplate & much to my surprise there's that Quick Connect B.S. in it! Should have guessed but I was like 19 the last time I did a pickup replacement in a L.P.?

Please understand that I'm really not that big into L.P.'s. in the first place, Epiphone's or Gibson's? Actually I don't really like the feel of most of Gibson's solid body guitars, Explorers excluded!!! I don't know, I love their sound & having the independent volume knobs for each pickup is great but that's about where our relationship parts. I'm not going to list off the stuff that I don't like because it's besides the point & it would take to long, this is just a project to play with?

Now, since the last L.P. I worked on was in the late 90's I need some help with these stupid things. The volume pot where the connections go are also push/pulls. On these pots are a series of solder prongs right next to the female harness. Can I just solder to the existing push/pull pot's prongs without the quick connect or am I going to have to replace them in order to get my Duncan's in??? I can put up a picture of the guts if you like but I'm guessing anyone who has the answer already knows exactly what I'm talking about?

Thanks!!!!

Re: L.P. Quick Connect Wiring Question

It's going to be getting all new guts sometime soon but for now I just want to get the pickups in there, preferably without having to spend any more money....

Re: L.P. Quick Connect Wiring Question

Understood. I have not messed with an EPI with their quick connects. Only Gibson proper. Might PM Blueman335. He's probably one of the more knowledgeable about EPIs and their wiring.

Re: L.P. Quick Connect Wiring Question

Some people cut the quick connects off of the original pickups, and wire them on the Duncans...you will have to traslate the color code. Some people buy quick connects online, and wire them into the Duncans. If you aren't too concerned about modding the originals, just cut the connectors off (leave some wire), then wire in the Duncans. You can replace all of the other components later and wire them in if you want.

Re: L.P. Quick Connect Wiring Question

Thanks Mincer! I was actually just contemplating that. I guess it seems like the most logical answer? I bought my pots and capacitors this morning & I've already got everything else I'll need to re-wire completely. All that should be here by the beginning of next week so now I'm not sure if I should just wait for that to arrive before I go messing with it but these stock pup's really SUCK so I'm having a hard time leaving it alone!

I know I should probably just put it away for now & play one of the 20 other guitars I own but I'm finally getting used to the guitar's neck thickness and scale length so on the other hand I kinda just want to get it done. I've pretty much been playing Strat's, Tele's, & other Fender's or G&L's for the past 20 years (F¥<£ I'm getting old) so the neck is going to take some getting used to, it gets quite short if I play sitting down...

Re: L.P. Quick Connect Wiring Question

oh, thats diff than I was expecting.. I bought a gibber once that had the quick connects and I searched world wide for the connectors and no one sold them. had to pull the whole blinking thing and wire it up normally or buy a diff set of Gibson pups with the connectors. got standard wiring and Duncans..But again, that was s diff connector. Hopefully you can find the right connectors or cut and splice..

Re: L.P. Quick Connect Wiring Question

Yeah, it just depends if you care about cutting the wires on the original pickup. Before you do, try to figure out what wire does what. Leave some of the original wire on. It is easier to connect and heat shrink the new pickup wire onto the old one than try to get it to stick inside the connector.
