Lace Sensor "Hot Gold"??

I'm a humbucker guy who has recently gotten a Strat. I want to replace the pickups with a set that will cancel hum while still getting the nice vintage single-coil tone. Do you experts think that the Lace Sensor Hot Golds would be a bad choice for SRV, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayer style tones? If not, should I get the bridge pup in 13.2k for more versatility or will I need it in 6.0k to approximate those aforementioned tones?

I have them and don't like them for those tones. There quiet and good for certain things but in my opinion, to get that sound you need a true single coils like Texas Specials or something similar.

I agree w jimbo1 re the hot golds.

If you don't get many bites on this one, try a new thread w/a title that reflects your desire for hum free vintage tones. There are people out there w/the proper experience, but I'm not one of them! Good luck!

i saw a clapton strat at the music store in the city and ifi get a chance to in the next few days i might go out and try it. if i do i will definitely post a report in this thread

i will say this about the lace sensor hot golds. i loved them when i had them wired up with the clapton boost kit. it got those amazing stratty bell tones and then screamed when you turned up the boost. But when i had them in another guitar that did not have the boost kit i thought they were pretty bland.

One advantage of them is that they have almost zero string pull so you have them really close to the strings for super responsiveness.

to me the hot gold sounds like a clean and clear strat tone with more "gurgle". i wouldnt recommend it for the applications you mentioned. i would go with light blue or silvers (fatter stat tones).

also keep in mind the lace sensor series are not TRUE humbuckers. they are TRUE single coils with noise REDUCTION. you will still get some 60 cycle hum, but not as much as normal single coil pickups.

one other thing! this is what frustrates me the most. Lace doesnt offer the sensor series in RW/RP. so you really can loose some hum cancelling possibilities , especially if you have a bridge humbucker.

i'd recommend the seymour classic stack +'s or dimarzio's 54 pro/with heavy blues 2 in the bridge.

+1. I just got the Hot Gold set, with the hot bridge, but wired it with the Clapton mid boost electronics. These are killer pickcups, IF used with the Clapton mid boost. I don't know what they sound like without the booster, but I can get all the vintage strat tones I want, then switch to a sweet humbucking tone.

I had a set of Hot Golds and thought they were MUCH better than the regular Golds from the 90's. They sure didn't have the real single coil snap or quack, but they were decent. The overdriven tones I thought were where these pickups shine because they don't have the scoop of singles and they don't have the honk of humbuckers, but did their own thing with some kind of compression built-in. My set was all 6k and I didn't think the 13k bridge would have worked for me (figured it would be too middy though I admit the bridge pickup sounded a bit weak, like a strat's).

I have a Clapton strat with the old Lace Sensor Golds. I installed a Clapton pre amp and Hot golds with Hot Bridge in my Malmsteen strat- immediately, I noticed the Hot Golds did sound better- but I haven't had time chance to do an extensive side by side comparison.

The hot bridge, suprisingly, isn't middy compared to other overwould bridge pickups. It sounds just like the other Hot Golds, but has more power to balance out with the middle and bridge.

The Lace Sensor golds, and Hot golds, did sound more like vintage single coils than other noiseless singles I had (Dimarzio HS-3's, EMG SA's).

I think for Lace Sensors to get their full potential they have to be used with the Clapton preamp. The pre amp is always on, and if you have the midboost at zero, I think the preamp still has an effect on their tone that improves them. I understand the pre amp gives a 12 db boost, and the mid range control gives an additional mid range boost, and 12 db boost.
