Re: Lace Sensors

he used to have the golds in his signature strat now he has fender noiseless but much of the tone comes from the active preamp that is build in to that guitar

hmm, did he use the preamp for the lace sensors too?

Re: Lace Sensors

hmm, i don't know if i want that too :)
so i'd rather go for sth different ;)

just wondering .. do you know what brand and model the preamo is?

Re: Lace Sensors

May I ask within this thread how do the Lace Sensor pickups work relative to say the new Classic Stacks Plus or other noiseless singles?

Its the Fender Eric Clapton Midboost Kit.

The Lace Sensors have a special magnet or material surrounded by wire coils that picks up the vibrations in the strings. Its a bar magnet I believe. The magnet isn't as powerful as Alnico, so it can be moved very close to the strings.

The Stack Plus is a regular single coil, but stacked to become humbucking, with Alnico 5 pole pieces and wire coils around them.

Re: Lace Sensors

As far as I know, the Lace Sensors aren't "true" noiseless single coils. They're quieter than most, but they don't have any noise cancelling circuit, like a humbucker or a stack.

Re: Lace Sensors

Hello Guys,
IMHO Claptons Vintage "Blackie" and the 335 was far better "tonally".

The new stuff has always sounded like something is wrong with the EQ.

Best Regards

+1

I personally think his "new tonality" leaves an awful lot to be desired. Yet, he sticks with it, even throughout the Cream reunion concerts which I thought was a real shame. Can't he hear it? I know he doesn't have to 'try' any more but come on!

Re: Lace Sensors

I had the gold lace senors in my '90 Strat Plus. I hated them and switched to hot and cool rails. They sounded thin and weak. But if you want the 50's classic bell like tone, these are the ones you want.

I had a set in my Strat Plus. They just didn't do the "classic Strat" sounds, too full in the mids and muffley, especially in pos'n 2 & 4. They sounded ok when driven, bit I guess that was because of the extra mid content. The SSL-1's in my Legacy gave that sound, and thats the sound I think of for SRV, Hendrix, and 70's and early 80's Clapton. I'd like to try the mid boost with the new SD Classic Stack pluses. Could be the best of both worlds.

Re: Lace Sensors

I have some Lace Hot Golds in my Fender HM Strat Ultra. They are exactly what I want there: smoother and more sustain than ordinary Fender single coils.

Re: Lace Sensors

Are the Lace Sensor hot golds more or less compressed than traditional single coils?

stevie_bees, that is the best quote I've ever read in anyone's signature.

Thankyou very much.

I think that the Lace Sensors are more focussed and compressed sounding than single coils, especially noticeable on the in-between settings. Single coils seem to be more open.

It appears the new hotter magnets are an attempt to address this issue.

Re: Lace Sensors

Clapton used the Gold lace sensors from the late 80's through the mid 90's. These were then superceded by the Fender Noiseless pickups, that are not Lace Sensors. He now only uses the Lace Sensor equiped guitars for slide work. I suspect this is because Lace Sensors can be put very close to the strings.

The Fender Noiseless pickups now in use are kind of gutless without the onboard pre-amp IMO. I wonder if the Fender Noiseless will in turn be in superceded by the new Sarium Colbalt Noiseless pickups designed by Bill Lawrence? These are vastly superior by themselves for true vintage single coil tone, to both the slightly older Fender Noiseless design, and the original Lace Sensors, in my opinion.

Are these the L-200/L-280/L-290/L-298 models?
