Re: Laney Amps????

Welcome bro! Eh the answer would be YES! What do you want to know about Laney amps? In class A you got 3 lines to choose from:

VC
LC
Lionheart

The VC is a vintage voiced amp something like a Vox, but better in my opinion. The LC is a more modern amp with a plenty of gain. Very smooth beautiful tones. Great lead any rhythm sounds. The Lionheart is Laneys answer to the boutique craze. Lionhearts are fantastic amps that have all the touch sensitivity and headroom you expect in boutique amps. They are channel switching amps. More gain than people realize.

So if you want that EL84 pushed to the max sound, Lionhearts are for you bro. There are others. My favorite being the TT50. The V100h too but 100w is a little too much for me bro! I posted a humble little TT50 clip somewhere around here.

This should get you started bro. Good luck!

Re: Laney Amps????

Is there a big difference in tone type between VC30 clean and Lionheart clean. Basically can the Lionheart get VOX/Matchless clean tones?

Re: Laney Amps????

I have a Lionheart, and I've used AC30s, and I think you can definitely get in the same ballpark in terms of tone. I wasn't able to A/B them or anything, but they seemed like similar sort of amps to me in so far as the cleans went.

Re: Laney Amps????

Don't have, but have played some Laney's.

The Lionheart is a great amp. Laney have struck gold with that IMHO.

I wouldn't say the cleans are as good as a Vox AC, but it's a similar type of tone so unless you compare back to back or have the Vox tone imbedded in your braain then you may not notice too much of a difference.

The Lionheart is 1 of those amps which shows your flaws so it'll subconciously help your playing progress too.

Well they are completely different speakers and the EQ on the AC30 is interactive whereas the Lionheart has active tone and a 3 band so I can understand there is some difference but if it gets in the ballpark and has some chime (at least more then most amps) then its a winner for me. I would like to hear a comparison between the Lionheart VC30 and AC30 would be really interesting. SOrry for the slight hi jack but I thought I might get the Lionheart ball rolling for Zager77.

Re: Laney Amps????

The VC15 aren't class A anyway. And seriously what's this thing with class A? Just play amps or listen to clips and see if you like it. Then if it's class A or not...

Re: Laney Amps????

I've had a VC30 2 x 10 for years and it's a great amp. I've recently bought a Cornford Roadhouse 30 combo which I'm gigging for the first time tonight but I'll definitely be keeing the VC30 as a back up or alternative. I only use the clean channel, I use a Boss OD3 as a clean boost (level up full, gain on zero) and leave it switched on all the time and I use a Blackstar drive pedal for solos. There is still plenty of headroom to get a boost in volume for leads. This is a great little rig. The VC30 has a lot of tone for not much money although, if you're in the states, it's obviously going to cost you more, in the UK they're very cheap - our equivalent of the Peavey Classis 30 but, from what I've heard, a much better amp. The ouput transformers are a little weak - I've blown 2 in about 6 years of moderate use and eventually bought a higher spec transformer from Torres. No problems since, still has all the original tubes.

Re: Laney Amps????

I have just brought another laney....if you want loud clean and crunch go the lionheart 2x12, if you want soft clean and crunch go the 5w. I got the 5w....craps all over a handwired ac15 re-issue. I A/B'd them :P

Welcome to the forum Zager.

I'll stay out of the Class A discussion and take it you are looking for a "smaller" tube amp.

Prior to the LionHeart, which is really Laney taking a shot at the boutique market (you can't blame them), there was the LC15, LC15R and the VC15.

The 30 watt Laney's LC and VC are really more like 50 watt amps as they are very very loud, so if you are talking about smaller tube amps I would leave these out.

The VC15 has a better build quality than the LC15 and LC15R (reverb added). But, this year Laney did redesign the LC15 and LC30 and I haven't seen inside of these new ones, so the new models could be different in regards to quality. The LC15 is really not in the image of the LC30 as the LC30 is a pretty high gain modern sounding amp. The LC15 isn't a high gain amp, but more of a classic sounding amp. To blur that line even more the VC series is more classic sounding also, somewhat along the lines of the VOX AC series. The blurring of the line actually occurs at the 15 watt level between the LC15 and the VC15, as one would ask yourself if 2 classic sounding amps are needed. Another difference is the VC15 comes in bluesbreaker form, top access to the controls, and the LC15's controls are on the front.

The LC15 usually can be had for $100 or so less than the VC15, so you may be led your own pocketbook on that one. I expect most are going to want to play with different speakers and tubes as the expectation should be for any amp that is of lower end cost.

Also, the LC15 and VC15 are small fixed-biased amps, meaning they have to be set to a particular bias as there isn't a cathode keeping the bias within a certain range. These amps are my example to every internet techie who says "all small amps are cathode biased" or "small amps don't need to be biased". Taking things for granted can cost money in repairs.

Generally think of Laney amps as being of the hot-rodded Marshall flavor, with a mids-emphasis a little bit lower.

PS. I have a modded LC15.

Wixed
