anybody know anything about the older LANEY pro tube lead amps not the later AOR series ones this one has only 3 pre amp tubes/el-34 power tubes and no effects loop single channel no push/pull tone controls . just plug and play . how is the build quality? and tone ?

Re: laney pro tube lead (not AOR)

An 800 clone essientially, some models have suspect OT in them. If the price is right it would be an amp I would likely snatch up, I really like my 85 Pro Tube 50. I would imagine the Pro Tube you are looking at would be very similiar to mine when plugged into the low gain input. In that configuration the amp is only useing 3 pre tubes and is extremely Marshall like with a bit more lush ( spongier) bottom end.

Re: laney pro tube lead (not AOR)

can i get a nice 80's hard rock tone (lynch/schenker/moore/sykes/lee/ect) from it with a sd-1 or tube screamer . i'm looking for a simple single channel amp thanks scott

Re: laney pro tube lead (not AOR)

Had one.

It's a little bit more grainy than a Marshall 800 but similar in tone otherwise. Very "british" (as they should be, being from Britain and all ;) ) They are very loud too. Get an attentuator of some sort if you won't be able to crank it most of the time. It NEEDS to be cranked.

A good pedal as a boost will smooth it out a bit. Tubescreamer, Boss SOD, etc. I used to run a Tubescreamer (TS7? IIRC..the green late 80's model) through mine.

Re: laney pro tube lead (not AOR)

Does yours have Metal ( NOT Black) Corners on it? Sounds like the same
amp I have. Mine says PRO TUBE FIFTY not PRO TUBE 50 ? No FX loop
4,8,16 ohm output selector. I'm guessing late 70's early 80's??

Do you have a pic and some clips KMC? I would love to see and hear it.

If I front mine with the Duncan PU Booster I am in Hard Rock/Metal area for sure.

I'll try to get a pic of it some time this week. Hopefully sound clips to
follow. The original owner put a bad pair of 6CA7's ?? ( the U.S. = to EL34's)
and one arced out taking the grid resistor out. Hopefully that's all the
damage that occured? I just got 2 470ohm 5 watter's yesterday and a
pair of JJ EL34's. So next chance I get I'll put them in,Throw the switch
and stand back :saeek: and pray it comes back to life. ( Yes, I won't
forget to discharge the caps) the other problem is the speaker. it's a
Mackenzie and it has a rip in it, So it probaly sounds like crap? But I have
a Eminiace from my Marshall 8080 or a EV SRO I can put in it. I also have
a 2x12 cab in storage w/t 2 Celestion G70m (I think) in it. Maybe I'll take
a speaker from the cab? LUV to plug it into the cab, But my wife will flip
out if I bring it into the Apartment !! :blackeye:
