The Laney fizz and flub on the bottom is present there. Pump the mids and halve the gain, and thats what the older ones sound like.

I'm not a fan whatsoever of that kind of modern scoopy/grinding/fizzy sound..To my ears that just sounds like a crappy distortion pedal :laugh2: I much prefer his tone from the 70s. I would never have known that was Tony. Those kind of high gain nu-metal tones totally rob player personality from coming through, IMO.

Different strokes for diff folks :)

Hehe I pushed the Master all the way and kept the insane gain low enough for good clarity, I like the airy highs one can get through the G12H's with the VH100.
Very British and not scooped.

Oh I'm sure they sound good that way Rid, no doubt! Thats the way to run a n amp IMO...if ya need extra gain for a solo, goose it with a good pedal! (which you have a little experience with ;) )

I don't think it's fair to just put it in the "nu-metal" category.. He also uses the exact same amp for alle the Sabbath stuff. Is that also unpersonal and nu-metally???

If he's using that tone..as I said, I doubt I'd know it was Tony if I couldn't see him...that much gain and scoopy makes everyone and everything sound the same.

Sorry...don't care for those types of tones...fair or not, to me it sounds bad, and ultimately that's what it' all about for each individual.

Go for it. I dig tony iommi;s tone it is awesome especially on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and the 3 albums after that.
He has always use laneys so they most be good.

I must be blind to be missing this one.

The GH100TI is a little higher gain than my GH100L. Where I have the capability to switch from 4 to 5 stages of gain, the GH100TI is in the 5th gain mode only, non-switchable. The TI is a even simplier than my GH100L,which is a fairly simple amp.
They (Laney's) are generally more picky with speakers and tubes than Marshall's. I am really happy with my setup, as it resembles a really great modded Marshall sound. It is really " lit ", if you know what I mean. I think 6L6's (SED's) are the way to go, but to each his/her own. I just know I won't be changing mine any time soon. The first time I ever heard an amp and said "yeah, that's it".

Laney's are British sounding, but they are a bit different than Marshall's. A bit smoother, with a more Voxy treble, and are somehow darker at the same time.

You may want to consider a GH50L as the 100 watters are really stadium material. Piss yourself loud.

4 gain stages and a cathode follower in the preamp; the 6th triode is the gain recovery on the effects loop. The preamp looks similar to the recto, SLO, extacy, Ampeg 502/1002...you get the picture. They do not all sound the same, but they are flavors of the same modern high gain preamp. Some of them have a "circle the 800 preamp" section, like the early Laneys and Ampegs, while others have tweaked the design more. The GH100TI looks like they tweaked things a bit more, including a bass trimmer switch which will hopefully clean up the fuzz.

Well im still liking my VC50. Basically Vh100R combo. I just installed some weber beam blockers in it today, and man it really changes things. The high frequencies are definately spread out.. much more balanced sound, but im having a time finding the right tones again.

Anyway, most of these guys have described the laney tone pretty well. Has that fizzy overtone with the gain, and i can tell the TI has that slightly reduced by listening to that iommi clip. My VC50 can get that tone though, almost dead on. I use Mr. Spina's SD1 to tighten up the bottom end alot of times, and it also makes the gain even smoother, more like a mesa smooth instead of marshall harshness. Great amp but just a different flavor. I also recommend going with the GH50L instead unless you are sold on the iommi tone, mainly cause its half the price and you can always turn around and go a different direction.

Well, here the GH50L isn't half price, they almost cost the same. And look what happened last time I bought something as a fix instead :smack:

I can acquire an Iommi head for about 840$ from new.

Maybe it's because he's downtuning so much? I don't know, but I've seen videos with him, where's he's got another tone with the same amp, for the sabbath stuff. It's not like this is the only thing it can do, it can do a pretty traditional sabbath tone, he keeps his mids and highs about 7.5 for sabbath stuff I think, so that's not scooped.

Oh, just found the settings on the Iommi messageboard; "Presence is at 7, Treble at 7.5, Mids at 5, Bass at 7, Bright is on, Resonance is on, Bass is off. Note that we have now loaded all the 4x12"s with Celestion G12H speakers."

Hey, sorry for highjacking the thread, but i'm thinking of putting a Celestion Speaker into my Laney 112 Tube amp, And am thi nking of the Heritage Series G12H, and put in some JJ Tubes aswell. You guys think this mightgo well, or a bit of a miss match?

I meant it as a price-wise comment.

It's very Vox sounding & a nice little amp once you change the speaker. I don't recall what the original one was, but I put a G12H30 in it & that turned it into a super sweet amp.

Seems like Laney's love that speaker, Tony uses the same and some of the other guys recommended it.

I don't have a lot of experience with speakers, but I love the 12H30....

Combined with a V30 or a Greenback & it's a killer:bigthumb:
