Laney VH and GH

Re: Laney VH and GH

i havn't noticed it in any typical nu-metal band's rigs.. from what i've seen its a relatively new range, compared to the likes of the JCMs and the laney range..

admittedly, i've only played through a laney LC30 and an ashdown peacemaker 60 (but neither of the heads you mentioned), and i don't get the chance to do much metal...

as bui picked up on, paul gilbert is probably one of laneys biggest endorsees (tho i seem to remember a link with iommi a while back)... see if you can pick up the instrumental 'B.R.O' by racer x.. its paul playing a bach peice through the V100, and nothing else..

The VH100R is an awesome amp. There's quite a few options on it (5 efx loops, switchable drive on each channel, bright switch, etc.), so there's definately a lot of ways to find a sound that works for you. They're pretty reasonably priced too (should be able to find one for about $900 brand new.. a few pop up on ebay from time to time around the $600-700 range).

It is a brighter amp, but can still dial in a very nice thump and crunch. I had mine set up with EL34's, and was very happy with it.

They're REALLY loud too.. when I had mine, I was able to play gigs with the volume set right around 4. :saeek:

+1 to all that! My son has Alex's old Laney and it crushes. It sounded great immediately, then he started running it with a BBE 482i and it is the shiznitz. I've only had about 30 minutes on this amp myself, tons of versatility, can't wait to have a chance to spend some quality time with this unit. And from what I have heard so far, IMHO you are not sacrificing tone for versatility at all with this amp. If it wasn't so loud (it isn't light either!), I'd try to pick one up for myself.

What's a good cab to go w/ the VH100R? I don't need the BEST.. I just need a cab that's cheap and doesn't suck :laugh2: (preferably used of course)

I would go with something with cl80s...a rounder speaker since the laneys are a brighter amp, i think using v30s may make it too harsh...keep in mind though that i dont like v30s and i like a warmer/darker tone...

Re: Laney VH and GH

Ok, perhaps I jumped too soon on the Laney. I'm really starting to think I won't be able to afford it... the 5150 seems to have gained value lately on the used market as well. It looks like my choices are back to the Blue Voodoo and 5150. The BV60 seems nice. Cheap.. all tube. Is the price break worth it? I can't find any clips..

Hey, thanks alot man! I hadn't heard of those Peavy Ultra's, but they look pretty sweet! What kind of cons do they have? And, what's the difference in the Ultra and Ultra Plus?

Also look into Peavey Ultra's...predecessor to the XXX amps...3 channels etc...

+1....these are great for the money...PM me if you wanna know anything about them....I could also make some quick soundclips if you are interested. But I am leaving for Atlanta for 5 days on Tuesday so you gotta do it before then or you will have to wait. Mine has some great cleans, the crunch channel is good for bluesy stuff, and the high gain is pretty good too, but I don't use it too much anymore.

I've played a XXX and the Ultra is better IMO

Some sound clips, especially of the highest gain channel, would be great! :notworthy

Re: Laney VH and GH

I'll try to get a clip up tomorrow....but I havent played anything high gain in awhile...we'll see what happens.

The tubes in it a 6L6's so it won't sound quite the same as your British amps will but it's still a pretty versatile amp.

Re: Laney VH and GH

I'm not sure about the price on that amp, but FYI, I payed $450 for my 2x12 combo....probably too much. But the guy at the shop knew me and my mom had no clue what we were talking about at the time we bought the amp a few years ago...

Heres a couple clips I put together into one clip. Both are using the channel with the most gain. I used my Epi Dot for the first one (which is why there's a bit of feedback if you can hear it) and my Epi Les Paul for the VH one.

EDIT:

HAHA Someone forgot the link :smack:

Here ya go!

Now that I think about it....my cover of Scuttle Buttin on there too is just me playing my strat straight into the crunch channel of the amp....I don't think I eq'ed it at all....it's not that great tho.

EDIT 2:

Upon listening to Scuttle Buttin....I should totally re-do that, it sucks.

Oooooo.. not bad.. not bad at all. Nice crunch, I like that. A little on the bright side, but I like that. Does adding a bit more bass muddy it up? Also, what kind of pup's are in that LP, AND; what speakers do you have in there? Thanks ALOT man! :yourock:

Edit:

One more thing.. in your judgement.. could I pull slightly heavier stuff out of the amp without being muddy?

Re: Laney VH and GH

Well, the bass on there is on 10. But the amp has this thing called a "resonance" switch. It allows you to add a bit more resonance in the high, mid, or bass range. I usually have it set to the mid one so my amp cuts thru the mix better at band practices. If you put it on the bass one it would add that little more bass that you want. It also shakes the house if you have the amp loud enough. :smack: I don't feel that it gets muddy, but my opinion might differ from another persons.

My Les Paul has a SD Custom 5 in the bridge, which is what you heard on that clip.

I don't know how well it can do Slayer, but back when I played metal all the time, I could get a pretty descent early Metallica tone with it on the crunch channel with the hi-gain input.

Oh, also these were recorded using the low-gain input. I use it 99% of the time.
