Yes you can record straight no models. They are pretty sturdy plastic, I know I just dropped mine twice! They run off of software so the breakout box just has the connections and in the UX2 the phantom power.

Are you able to record without using any of the amp models on the toneport?I'd like to be able to record straight from my 530. Whats the build quality like? It'll be traveling round a bit. Looks promising so far though.

I've never done it before but I'm pretty sure you can. There's a choice under the amp models in Gearbox that bypasses an amp (it's labeled "no amp").
