I like the color of it the way it looks in the studio there. The lighting they're using makes it look totally different than the way those "Carlton Burst's" actually look. Still, I'd love to have one.

As if Larry Carlton couldn't smoke any of us even if he was playing a broken banjo.

Re: Larry Carlton ES-335 Review...by Larry himself!

Cool video. I'm on vacation right now in northern, Ca. and chose to bring my ES-335.
To spend a week playing one guitar, the 335 is a fun one. One reason I chose to leave the stock 57 Classics in there is probably the same reason Carlton does. That's the sound of a 335.....or at least Mr. 335's tone, so why deviate from it?

Re: Larry Carlton ES-335 Review...by Larry himself!

There are 4 (IMHO) guitars that every guitar player has to have.
1. A Telecaster
2. A Stratocaster
3. a Les Paul
4. A 335.

With these 4 guitars you can do anything! Out of HB style guitars the 335 has always been my favorite and I can't imagine not having one!

I think every pro player should at least have owned and experienced those four...that's for sure!

But I'd be lost without a couple of good acoustic guitars.

I'd say three - with two others as optional:

1. Telecaster
2. Stratocaster
3. Great acoustic: Martin, Taylor, Collings...

4: Something with humbuckers...could be a Gibson or a Fender
5: National Resonator

From my perspective, options 3 & 4 are the way to go, especially the 335, which is the ultimate blues guitar (just look at the countless blues players that have used them). I'm from the school of blues that prefers warm tones, and from me that leaves out Fenders. There are plenty of guys that do great things with them though (Clapton, Coco Montoya, & Jeff Healey come to mind).

I think a hollow body electric is an essential thing to have in your arsenal, either a full-bodied one like a 175, or a thinline (Ibanez makes an assortment). Those great acoustic tones are nice plugged in or unplugged. To me, the Fenders could easily be replaced with an SG, either HB or P-90 version. My "warm tone" version is:

1) 335
2) LP
3) SG
4) Hollow body electric

All with humbuckers or P-90's...right? :smack:

You're clearly just not a Fender kinda guy! LOL!

Many smiles! Lew

Sweet-looking guitar. Apparently the graphite nut is "amazingly powerful."

As far as what you 'need' as a guitarist, i find i cover all of the bases i need with my Strat (two vintage Fender single coils and a CC in the bridge) and my SG-X with the coil tap for the humbucker. I think an ES-type guitar would be sweet for cleaner stuff but i probably do 80% of my playing with a decent amount of gain, so the need for one is pretty much null where i'm standing.

Howdy,

My Es-335 has the block inlays and stop tail, too. Now if I could only play half so good as Larry!

Re: Larry Carlton ES-335 Review...by Larry himself!

I used to own an ES-335 -- technically, it was an ES-333, but it's pretty much the same thing, with largely cosmetic differences.

I liked it for a little while, then found myself not playing it...at all. Of all the electric guitars I've owned in my life, it was the only one I sold. (My first two beginner guitars ended up in a parts box, then disappeared into the night.) Maybe I wasn't spending enough time with it, or playing it the way it was intended. Maybe I didn't have the right amp match for it. Who knows?

Perhaps one day I'll go back and try the ES-335 again, but I've got other things on my to-buy list before that, including a nice 12-string Rick. I've already got the big three: Tele, Strat, LP.

Haha, we all have ou different "must haves".

So far I have a:
1. Strat: HW1, I'd like to get a new guard and pickups though.
2. PRS McCarty: has a Custom and PGn, does modern rock and hard blues well.
3. 1971 SG: Currently has a broken head stock. Need to get it repaired and I am going to toss out the T Tops and put in some PAF style pickups I think.
4. Ibanez RG Prestige: going to be for shred and instrumental stuff.

What I want still:
1. Telecaster: Love Mr. Langs tone as well as Mr. Collins.
2. LP copy: An Edwards, Heritage or possibly a Gibson (but I dont want to give into them). Setup with some nice PAF clones.
3. PRS Singlecut: setup with a C5 and 59n or something similar.
4. Semi-hollow style guitar: More than likely a ES 335, the Lucille model is gorgeous though!

So I'm almost there!

Re: Larry Carlton ES-335 Review...by Larry himself!

interesting about the bridge spacing, seems like there is more room between the bridge and tailpiece.

i feel the warm toned version is fairly redundant, they are all good guitars but i hear more difference between a strat and tele than a 335 and les paul
