Last time i´ll change pups, so, help please!!

Hello guys...

i´m really tired of asking this another time :smack: , sorry... but after trying a bunch of pups i ain´t satisfied with a set enough to keep with them for a long time... btw i told you about the specs of the guitar it that helps:

maple neck thru, alder wings
24 frets
24 3/4 scale
ebony board
floyd rose

i have tried emgs (don´t like them on this guitar, not for the tone, which i like, but because i think the axe deserves pasives, too much good construction and woods to waste with actives imo), i tried a duncan set, parrallel axis trembucker with alnico 2 pro... didn´t like it, i change back to the original pups (dimarzio tone zone, paf pro), like it at first, but i´m tired of them... i read one thread several weeks ago saying the same, that the dimarzios are ok at first but after some time people get tired of them... its the case... so i have decided to go back again to duncans, but i don´t want to have to ask again about this in a long long time... so which set do you honestly think is the best one? i will play in the rule of opeth kind of tones (last records)... so a lead bridge pickup that works for metal rhythms and solos and a neck pup with a superb clean sound (with good armonics also)... nowadays i have the dimarzio set, and the tone zone isn´t bad but i think i can find something better, and the paf pro has disapointed me a lot... so which one please...oh and thanks a lot

If the tone you want is in the EMGs that you loved, then get over your concept of "wasting" this guitar on actives and use them. It sounds like you're desperately going through a pile of DUncans and DiMarzios trying to nail the sound you already found in an EMG. It ain't gonna happen. If that's the sound you want, you already know where to find it. Stop being so finnicky about the name on the pickup or its classification and use what gives you the sound you want, no matter what it is or who makes it.

You should never apologize for this. Its the fundamental reason this forum is here. ;)

Jazz neck ; great clean and shred with clarity under gain .
Distortion bridge if you play metal ;nice thick lead and chunky for rythm .
Those two are great for harmonics .
Now if you like to play very fast and want more precision ( but less softness )put a Demon in the bridge

Maybe a JB/59 combo? The JB will give you the mids and highs with good crunch, while the 59 will warm up your neck slot with plenty of lows.

Also you might want to look at the Custom.

Don't forget trem spacing.

yeah, that sounds so true, but i want to try a passive set that works first... the reason is that there is another bc rich comming soon with emgs...i haven´t told this on the opener message, sorry...

i will have the emg tone with the next guitar, so i want a different tone for the actual axe, and even its true that i don´t want both guitars sounding the same, its also true that i don´t want this particular guitar with that tone, i mean... i like the emg tone on certain kind of guitars and styles, but i don´t think its a pup that works great for everything... thats what im finding for...

thanks for the reply

With a maple neck through, ebony board, and floyd rose, I’d run far far away from the JB and the Demon. Having also tried a CCb in a very similar guitar (no floyd and 25.5” scale), I also recommend you stay away from that. All three were too bright and harsh in my Mockingbird. The CC had the tamest highs of the three, but the bottom end was too loose and spongy to keep up with metal rhythms. Right now I’m sporting Gibson pickups in my ‘bird, but even those aren’t 100% of the way there (but easily the best of the bunch I’ve tried). The set is a 498T/490R and they are so far the least worst of what I’ve tried. That doesn’t mean they are not good, they just aren’t perfect.

For bringing the thunder to the axe I’d look at the invader. On paper it seems to make a lot of sense in a maple neck through guitar (I admittedly have only tried the Invader briefly in a Tom Delong strat, so take that for what it’s worth). For the neck a matching invader might do the trick, or possibly a 59n to warm up the bottom end.

the tone is kinda similar to the invader with a little less bass and more clarity.
notes arent mushy, but i prefer invader for rhythm(more tone, cant explain).

The JB sounds best with 250K pots as well, that's one of the only things things that will take out the spikiness of the high end.

An invader set, or A2P CC set, but I don't know if those will be tight enough for you.

Re: Last time i´ll change pups, so, help please!!

yes it is trem spaced and the pickup that most resembles it duncan wise is a mix of the invader with the custom.
if you live in europe i would DEFINITLY try bare knucle pickups without resitation.

Re: Last time i´ll change pups, so, help please!!

ok, but while i keep interested on the andersons (which set would it be, i can order them at germany or the uk...is a H3 bridge/ H1 neck the set you recommend me, isn´t it?) will do a Custom/Jazz set work also?

i am seeing the bare knuckle site rigth now...their high output humbucker apears to be really hot... listening to their clips, the guy can play, and the pups sounds great also...

Why not the DM Steve's Special? Great for metal, very tight, similar tone to EMGs and even better, hammering palm mutes and cuts like a knife.

Re: Last time i´ll change pups, so, help please!!

i wasnt recomending you a set only the bridge pickup.i have no experiences with the neck H1.
and have no ideia where in europe you can order anderson pickups.best luck for you and try e-mailing them.

you could email these guys(gtr heaven) .they have the andersons, duncans and others always in stock and with good prices, maybe they ship world wide, there online tech support is pretty straight foward and quick:

Duncan Distortion for the bridge and Jazz for the neck.

hi again, so i writed them for the pup shipping and it seems that i´ll have a hard time with this ones, and so with the bare knuckle pups also because there is no autorized dealers here in spain, and i won´t like to eat the pups if i don´t like them... while i can change a SD, dimarzio or EMG as long, so i´ll ask only for duncans rigth now...

rigth now i´ll find something for the bridge with a lot of output, but don´t want to sound harsh or shrill, so, a dark sounding pup... i´ve played the dimebucker, and the jb models also, but didn´t get a dark sound out of them... is the invader the only one able to do this? (oh another info, i´ll tune the guitar to Eb or D)

thanks a lot for the help ;)
