Lava Box arrives...

Okay, spent a couple of hours with this bad boy tonight. I had it in from on my Brenna 40 prototype. (2x5881, 5U4, blackface tone) Single 12 cannabis rex speaker.

Guitar was my Strat with traditional single coils.

Build quality is first rate as with the other SD pedals I own. Built like the proverbial tank. Nice rubber pad thing on the bottom so it won't slip around. Three knobs, volume, gain and a 6 position tone knob labeled Rumble.

Hmm... the name Rumble is oft used when someone is referring to that sweet singing lead tone of the old Dumble amps. I won't make that comparison here, but I was able to dial in some very sweet singing leads.... you make the call.

The Rumble control is basically a low frequency roll off. It doesn't have as much to do with that singing lead tone I refer to above. That has more to do with the gain knob. But, this control nicely adds in just the right amount of low end. I do the same thing with the EF86 channel of my Dierdre 30 amp. It's a tone shaper if you will.

Does this pedal color your tone? Sure. It sounds great. I'm not a big distortion pedal guy, but I liked this one. In fact, I like it a bit more than the twin tube.

Evan and crew wrote a nice manual. They give suggested settings on how to dial in several basic tones. That's a nice touch when manufacturers do that. Oh yeah, unlike some pedals I've bought in the past, this pedal comes with a battery. I can't figure out why someone would sell pedals that cost $100-350 and not include a cheap 9v battery. :smack:

So, where will I personally use this? Well, I'm a "play at home" guy at this point. There are times when I want that killer cranked amp tone when I can't play loud or just want to not make my tinnitus worse. This pedal sounds full and rich at all volumes. So, for me it'll be a lot of low volume playing. I did crank the crap out of it though and it holds up quite nice when the amp is cranked and adds some power tube distortion to the way the pedal is driving the preamp. Nice job guys.

Oh yeah, I got serial number 004. Very cool.

Re: Lava Box arrives...

Sounds like an awesome pedal. Is it more of a lead machine or an all out rocker?

..I think it's safe to say at this point that Seymour Duncan is an awesome company overall, and are about a delay pedal away from being the best effects pedal company. *hint hint hint*

Re: Lava Box arrives...

How'd you get one already? I thought it was going to be a couple months yet before the Lava Box would be available. What is the street price on that baby?

EDIT: I googled. Looks like $99 is the street price. Cool.

I put my order in a long long time ago. :)

No, it's not just a lead tool. It's got some nice crunch to it.

Re: Lava Box arrives...

So what did the Dierdre sound like with the Lava Box up front? Did a Fender circuit grow some Marshall hair? What kind of distortion did it sound like?

Re: Lava Box arrives...

Thanx Scott.Nice review! So send it to me now and let me check it how it feels on heavy riffing ,crazy Wah abused leads and some wierd whammy usage.
Thanx in advance:smokin: :6: :fingersx:

Re: Lava Box arrives...

It went all classic rock on me. And it was the Brenna, not the Dierdre. Get your Celtic beotches straight!

Re: Lava Box arrives...

My Celtic beyotch is a different breed from the rest. I have a hard time with anything that isn't a Marshall circuit. ;)

Re: Lava Box arrives...

Hey Scott:

Glad you like the pedal.

Just so's ya'll know's... The Lava Box really isn't going to be out until late-March / early-April (and maybe a little later outside the USA). We had our factory send us the first four "pilot production" units so our engineers could check them out from head to toe to make sure they were up to our spec. (Actually, we do several of these "first article" inspections -- this was the final one with graphics and packaging).

So, Scott and Jeremy each got a Lava Box as a "thank you" for the work they put in on this board. (Robert got a Twin Tube and Simon got a Twangbanger). Now you know the benefits of being a moderator.

And, one of the benefits of being a SDUGF member is that you get to hear about gear like this even before the magazines get a review unit.

Sorry that you'll have to GAS a month or two longer before you can purchase a Lava Box. But I trust it'll be worth the wait.

Re: Lava Box arrives...

Crap, I didn't know that. I'm heading over to eBay right now. Let the bidding begin!

Actually, I think its the best duncan pedal I've used so far (my ears, not anyone elses). Maybe I just like the mosfet stuff, I dunno. I just got rid of a Full Drive 2 Mosfet An. Edition and I like the Lava better. That's the closest comparison I could make to it.

Oh yeah, it came with a battery inside all hooked up and ready to run. I just got an uber-expensive pedal from a company that had no battery in it. What's a cheap 9v cost these days?

Evan,

Any chance you guys will put sound samples of the new (& older) pedals on the SD website?.

Thanks,

Jeff

Re: Lava Box arrives...

It took me over a year to finally grab a Twin Tube and now this? Please tell me its ok to need 3-4 distortion pedals :)

Re: Lava Box arrives...

Scott...nice review. I'm curious if it cleans up when you roll the volume of your guitar down. If so, are they usable cleans? One of the things I like about the Boss DS-1 is it's ability to clean up almost totally when I turn the guitar's volume to 5 or so. Let's me leave the effect on all the time if I want to and just use my guitar's volume knob...

Thanks! Lew

Re: Lava Box arrives...

This sounds cool. I'm looking for something to help do more of that Santana thing with my Boogie. I'll have to check this out..
