Least favorite Duncan p'up

Re: Least favorite Duncan p'up

My least favorite is the 59 bridge. Just seems a PAF flavored pu should be sweeter with chunkier mids than that -- but it's icepick city in the average guitar.

But to be fair, I installed a 59 set in a guy's SG once, which was all-mahogany as SG's tend to be, and they did sound really good, MUCH better than the Airbuckers they replaced. So I guess it works well in a dark sounding guitar but in most guitars, fuhget about it. At least to my ear...

Re: Least favorite Duncan p'up

I have yet to hear a Duncan Single that I like, true single or stacked... Of course that can be said for everyone as I don't actually like single coils. Lil Humbuckers I like tho, The lil Demon is worlds better than it's full size counterpart...

As for humbucker's that I haven't liked, I haven't tried enough of them from the Duncan Camp to really say. I wasn't impressed with the JB or PG when I put them in my Charvel 750XL (Mahogany/Maple) but both sounded alright in my mij Squier Strat (Poplar) I don't own either of the pickups any more and that Strat now has a Full Shred in it. For my personal taste, I find that Duncans have a voice that is too vintage. I should probably try a Custom...

Re: Least favorite Duncan p'up

The ones that I haven't been able to do anything with are the PG, Demon, Hotrails, Alnico 2 single and a number of the duncan designed pickups. I don't doubt that the regular production SD pickups are usable but for my style of playing they don't work.

Re: Least favorite Duncan p'up

Never got along with the Demon or the Invader. I also don't care for the Custom 5, I tried it in my PRS and it just didn't do it for me.

Re: Least favorite Duncan p'up

It switches.. I'll dislike one then it'll grow on me..

For example, I used to really dislike the Jazz neck.. just didn't work with me at all. Last time I tried it I fell in love. At the moment.. I think that my 59n just sounds really.. lifeless.. dead.. and boomy. But then I'll find a setting that makes it sound like sex.. some good Clapton Cream tones etc.

I didn't like the hotrails, the first few times I tried it, then it too grew on me.. very different tone. And hotrails in the neck! *drools*

Pregnant twice ? :chairfall

Re: Least favorite Duncan p'up

It could have been the guitar but i really didn't like the PG bridge, i did like the really tight bottom (how is this an A2 pickup? lol) but the feel of that pickup is just a dead feeling, and the highs are raspy and icepick city. Also in the same guitar the invader sounded really unfocused and confused. JB in this guitar is heaven though.

I'd say so far my least favorite is the 59 neck yuck. Jazz neck is 1000000+ times better for everything IMO.

Distortion is cool but just sounds too over the top and i'm all about high gain so.....
