Leather guitar straps: Info needed

I'm looking for a company that makes really soft leather straps. Most of what I've seen are too stiff and not flexible or comfortable enough. Any suggestions?

I appreciate the helps folks!

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Can it be Suede or does it have to be Full-Grain?

Good quality leather will be stiff and hard.

Here are some articles on how to soften hard leather:

1.

2.

3.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

Most welcome!

Hard genuine leather will get soft over time, but you can use stuff to get it soft now rather than wait some years. I still have my second guitar strap, genuine leather from Mars Music. It was stiff as a board when I first got it but now it is very soft (but definitely still usable.)

It reminds me of back in the day, when we used to use neat foot oil to work our baseball gloves in.

Thanks, I'll definitely check them out

One thing, they dye the backs for any color other than amber (I believe that is the natural color). I got mine with black backs and the dye did come off on my shirt the first couple gigs. It was hot out at one of them so I wasn't the least bit surprised. It washed out so no problems since. They almost always have sales going on too, buy 1 get 1 free and whatnot.

Re: Leather guitar straps: Info needed

The Franklin straps are available nearly everywhere and they're really soft and pliable.

Re: Leather guitar straps: Info needed

My Franklin is super soft
Glove leather they called it

I also have a Rock Steady cheapo that works almost as well

Re: Leather guitar straps: Info needed

The nice thing about Franklin is they come in a lot of suede and glove leather shades of black/brown/tan, with colored stitching that can accent your guitar. Plus, they're under $40.

I like Moody guitar straps too, but I can't afford those prices when Franklin is that cheap.

haislip is reallynow one of the go to guys for intelligent commentary. Yup, ya buy a cheap pliable strap, it sags and tends o wear out, but a stiff strap over the long term conforms and strectches just the right amount . Bad news is a premium strap could well t\run over 150 dollars US.

Re: Leather guitar straps: Info needed

My favorite strap is a PRS-branded strap I bought off their website years ago. I wish I had bought one for each guitar. Nice and wide and soft which are IMHO key to a comfortable night on stage with a heavy guitar.

Re: Leather guitar straps: Info needed

Ebay is the place for interesting, original straps my friend. Amazon too, although they don't have nearly as many unique choices. I would first look into Old Forge Straps--very soft and luxurious!

Other faves are Walker & Williams, Pete Schmidt, and Franklin. I put them on my watch list for a while and wait until the prices drop LOL. I refuse to use anything other than a nice leather strap---NO LIFE TILL LEATHER!!

Re: Leather guitar straps: Info needed

Franklin is good. I have many. Moody is very nice, I have one, but it is stiffer leather, though still very comfortable. Italias are also nice, and they did a custom order for me.

But THE softest strap on the market right is Levy's Leathers's M17SS. OMG...most babies' butts would be considered hard asses in comparison, lol. Just beautiful. They have other models too, look for the garment leather straps.

I have 60 guitars and just as many straps. A good leather strap is really important to me. I have a lot of Franklin and Levy's, and a few others.

I will definitely be checking that one out. Sounds exactly like what I'm looking for

Thanks

Thanks man! And you are correct, the cheapy "leather" stuff will wear out quickly–not worth it from my experience. Pay a little extra and it will last forever (same with leather boots and jackets, IMO.)

eBay and Amazon are definitely cool places to check out for such things. I like leather straps but the two are used the most are Levy's Heavy Cotton (I have grey and tan which don't appear to be available right now.) Have used them with acoustics and electrics–very comfortable even with a heavy Les Paul.

I've been very impressed with Levy's. I have 2 and I know several guitar players who have their leather versions–no issues at all and seem to last a lifetime.
