i had a cover teacher for music once who said rests were the most important part of music, so nobody wrote anything that lesson, just left the scores blank :laugh2: - hey he was a cover teacher what was he gonna do

Edit: Well, now I'm not so sure that is it. Its the same backing track, but it has Marinblues doing some Tele work on it. If there's a standalone clip, I would appreciate it afterall, if you could post it.

I downloaded and listened to it last night. Nice work. I really enjoyed the first half. It was all very nice but to be very honest I thought it was a little long without something to break it up a bit. I think this was due more to the backing track and not your playing. The tone was very nice. I think it would be great if I walked into a club and heard some dude playing like that.....

Thanks mate. Yes it was a bit long but I was looking for criticism so I just carried on and on. It was one of those first take - post it and be damned jobs.

It took as long to record it as it did to play it - 5 mins. There were no touch ups or anything - just as it came out.

Anyone whose been in the forum over the last few weeks will know that I've not played in a band for about 20 years. My timing was completely shot! It is my greatest weakness at the moment so I'm sort of scared of losing it - and I play a little more confined than I would normally.

Very nice work Lee. We are both in the same boat. Playing at home, mostly just noodling, really takes it toll on one's timing. You did a great job especially considering the length of the piece you did. I think you have the right attitude about just going for it in one take. I tend to get tight when the red light goes on, too worried about being perfect. I tend to like my playing better when I just relax and allow myself to just get in the groove and trust my playing. Keep it up, relax, don't over analyse, have confidence in your chops. Like they say in golf, over analysis leads to paralysis.

Now the hard part: transcribe the Solar solo.

Anyway, what I meant before was: Minor blues in Cm. 1st 4 bars are Cm then it goes to Fm.

Well, try playing Cm stuff for the first 3 bars, then while the band still plays Cm for the 4th bar, make u'r improv outline a C7b9 chord (C,E,G,Bb,Db). Play this in the fourth bar, then when u go to the 5th bar (Fm), the chord tones should all resolve nicely to chord tones in Fm (F,Ab,C). Super cool sound that also will wake up the listeners ear.
I just threw on Solar off of Q & A and Metheny does this in the 3rd, 4th, 4th, 7th, 10th....choruses of his improv.

Sorry if I'm talking over u'r head. It's would be much easier just to show u if you were here.

Also, over the Cm chord, play Gm7 chord tones (G, Bb, D, F). And since the track had a Dorian flavor to the 1st 4 bars, u could play Dm chord tone lines that resolve to Cm.
And don't forget leading tone crap: (resolving B-natural to C in your Cm lines)
