Hi, anyone got any tips on doing left hand mutes? everytime i try it i get all kinds of weird noises like harmonics and stuff. is it because i have the gain too high? its not all that high for what i play but maybe it is for left hand mutes? how and where do you guys do your left hand mutes?

For example the main riff of smells like teen spirit is a nightmare for me as far as the left hand mutes go!!!!!

Thanks

Well, it sounds to me like you mute the string above one of those metal pieces (next to the fret). Do it over the actual fret. I'll try it when I get home.

Over The Metal Pieces=Harmonics

Re: Left Hand Muting help please

If you mute the strings with three or four fingers of your fretting hand you shouldn't get any harmonics because you're cutting off the string at more than one place. Just lay your fingers over the strings lightly enough so you don't actually fret notes but hard enough so that no open strings can ring and that will do the trick.

When I scratch the strings, or do a rake (eg things that require left hand muting) I palmmute as well so harmonics dont ring out.
