Legend amplifier

I got to play one of these at a gig this weekend. 30 watts solid state amp, with two 12AX7 preamp tubes for crunchiness.

Most efficient speaker they could have chosen. This amp was LOUD.

I ran both stages of gain on ten, and then set the volume around the 1 mark LOL. This let me control clean to crunch from the guitar, and then hit it with a Boss SD-1 for the dirties.

It did a fine job, but it will never take the place of my Music Man. :smokin:

Anyone else ever run across one of these early hybrids?

Re: Legend amplifier

In an old band, my other guitarist had one, though he'd bought it new and never took it out of his house, at least while we were together. IIRC, it was incredibly loud for what it was, sounded pretty good, yet needed a boost for a good, smooth lead tone. He managed to get it to sound pretty raunchy for rhythm by itself. What I really dug was the whole finger-joined (is that right?), natural-finished wood head and cab. The cab also had a wicker-looking grille, like an old boogie. I'd like to have one, someday.

This one had a wheat grill cloth, but was made of finger joined OAK. Good GOD it was loud. Cut through like nobody's business.

I ran mine the same way with only a good crunch from the amp. Took the SD-1 to make it thick and smooth.

Re: Legend amplifier

this is the famed Eliminator amp, yes?

Re: Legend amplifier

That's the exact model I played, but with a natural oak cab and a wheat cloth. I could get used to it, cause it was full and warm with all the feel of a good tube amp.

Re: Legend amplifier

I have one. Legend 30. Thay all vame with Cane Grills, and Oak finger jointed cabinets. I think the amp sucks, but the cabinet is really good so I took the amp out and put in a Eminence Alnico Canis Major and closed the back with plywood.
I did read where ZZ top played a legend someplace. maybe thats why the tone on elimator sucks compared to the earlier stuff?

Re: Legend amplifier

It sure wasn't the best I've played, but it was pretty far from suckage. I've heard a ton of all tube amps that sounded much worse. It was a totally useable sound for the stage.

Re: Legend amplifier

Yup, Billy G used the Legend 50 on that album. I had one, dolled it up as i hated the wood look...it was insanely LOUD! Used it at an outdoor gig and only had the volume at 9:00...I seriously don't know where I'd gig with it, so I sold it when i got my Bogner...still, I wish I kept it.:banghead: There's a knob on the back, man, that knob kicked in some sweet bad ass crunch...

Re: Legend amplifier

^^ Cool look. That pin striping reminds me of the look truckers go for on their rigs.

Does that control on the back say "Kick ass knob"? That's great!! :) I assume it's the second tube gain?

Loud, yes indeed. If I had ran it on 2 Saturday, the crowd would have split.
