"Legendary" SS amps?

Just out of curiosity, are there any "legendary" or classic SS amps?

I know there's plenty of "legendary" tube amps but can't really think of any SS amps that have helped define a sound or era or an artist.

(I use the term "legendary" very loosely.)

What about the Roland JC's? They seem to be a standard for cleans.

the roland jc120 is a "classic" ss amp, not my thing but some people like it. id rather have an old peavy bandit

That's the only one I can think of. Marshall MG might eventually become legendary. I have heard of them used for a lot of studio recording and they are a very popular SS amp.

Re: "Legendary" SS amps?

I'd say the only two off the top of my head are

Roland Jazz Chorus
&
Gibson Lab series (BB King anyone?)

I'd say the Randall RG amps from the 80s are about the only fairly well respected higher gain stuff. Those amps really did sound good for SS and Randall stuff of today can't hold a candle to it.

Whether you love it or hate it, the Rockman was the Line 6 POD of the eighties and was all over the place both on albums and session work/commercials. I dig the tones Tom got on Third Stage, but thats about it. Side-note-Scholtz's chorus was amazing.

Not a classic, but the PRS amp (yes they made an amp- late 80s, google it) was really good, but never got into big production. extremely rare. I tried a demo at Chuck Levins in 88 or so. Pretty amazing. The guy who built them now builds those Sword of Satari or whatever $2000 SS things.

Re: "Legendary" SS amps?

pretty much anything hughes and kettner made SS are awesome. I still cant bring myself to sell my tour reverb, brilliant amp for SS, great reverb, 3 channels footswitchable, great speaker, solid cab, good tolex/grille.

You mean the MG series they have out now? I hope not because that think sounds horrible.

Whatever Dimebag Darrell used, Randall something.

The amp Ty Tabor used, Lab Series.

Roland Jazz Chorus.

Humm, what else?

Re: "Legendary" SS amps?

yamaha made a line about 20-25 yrs ago that was REALLY outstanding .. dang if i can't remember the moniker

polytone minibrute (et al) are legendary for jazz

Re: "Legendary" SS amps?

I think Chuck Schuldiner from Death used the older Marshall Valvestates. I know they've got a 12AX7 in the preamp but that hardly counts as being a tube amp.

Can't really say if they're legendary but they're certainly praised for SS amps:

Hughes & Kettner ATS series
Tech 21 Trademark series
Old Marshall solid-states from the 80's. Lead 12, MOSFET amps??
Trace Elliot Tramp, Supertramp
Pignose

There was the Gallien Krieger 250ML that was used on alot of recordings- I think Rush and Queensryche used them a bit.

Re: "Legendary" SS amps?

The Polytone Mini-Brute II (Jim Hall sig) seems to be highly regarded amongst jazzers.

The Roland JC cleans are great but i don't like the OD.

Hey, wash your mouth out with soap!!!! Lol.

But it is a crap amp for sure. Still, it only cost £130 +/- so you're not gonna get an XTC tone with it and on clean it makes a good practice amp.

As long as you have the gain low and don't play any other amps EVER then the MG series is a great line.

Warhead.

I think that's as bad in tone as the MG! Dimebag just couldn't dial in a tone IMO. He's up there with Michael Romeo as far as i'm concerned.

Yup-forgot about those- Those GKs were SUPER cool. Maiden used them as well. Try to find one now- people in the know snatched 'em all up. I coulda bought one a dozen times and foolishly never did.

Get through the first 45 seconds or so of the interview and you can hear one- sounds like a mini 2205 link

The sounded cool- I had one. What I didn't like was the Chorus was to powerful. But the amp gave a HUGE tone in a tiny package. I wish they'd reissue it.

I ended up shorting mine out while messing with it. The amp had preset gain switches, but if you popped the top off, there were trim pots inside for the preset gain. Unfortunately I was an idiot and did work with the amp powered on and the screwdriver fell on the circuitboard :(
