Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I was planning on adding some double black replacement pickups to my butterscotch 68RI, but someone suggested removing the pickguard and going with zebra. So I made a little mock-up and, well, personally, I think I'm leaning towards the left, as it looks like a traditional LP custom - which do you prefer?

Here's the actual guitar for comparison, the pickguard was already installed/drilled.

hands down the right!!! much better look IMO...but i also NEVER like pickguards on LPs and zebras go great with lighter colors like amber and butterscotch!!

my plan for my next LP is a heavy flame amber with no guard, chrome hardware, chrome rings and zebras! now i just need to find the right amber LP!

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I might agree with a standard Mike (especially double creams - yum), but the customs are flashier, so I'm not convinced :)

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

the custom is best for zebras IMO b/c the binding is zebra if you think about it with all the black stripes in it...it just flows very well IMO. hey, it's your guitar...i know you have good taste, heck i buy your old guitars hahaha but that's just my take on it. i like a clean and sleek looking LP and pickguards just kill the lines and hide the nice wood IMO!

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

i'd go with right.. but double cream instead of zebra

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I like the right. I don't like pickguards over nice flame tops. The zebras go great with that color. I'd say double creams on a sunburst, but I like the zebra on the amber.

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I prefer the left one, but I think it would look better without the pickguard... I never liked these things !

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I definitely prefer the left. I like a pickguard on an LP and I think the double blacks look great on that guitar. Nice! :32:

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

Gibson were 1st to go with zebras, so I'd stick with them, and you definately don't want to be hiding flame beneath a scratchplate.

put a selector ring on R and I'd like it most

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I think that guitar definitely looks better without a pickguard, but id say black open coils with no pickguard.

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I love the look of zebras and if you put a black pickguard on that thing, it would kill. So I choose neither (sorry, I have to be difficult :D)

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

I _hate_ pickguards:)

They do ruin the look (imo) and don't do anything good (imo)...
Why cover the nice maple top???

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

Of the two you posted, the one on the left. However, if it were mine, I'd go zebra's WITH the pickguard. To me a Les Paul looks like a Les Paul with the pickguard on.

Either way it will look killer.

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

Definitely the left between those two. Zebras just look strange with that colour, IMO.

However, as others have said, the left without the pickguard would be cool. :)

Re: Les Paul cosmetics - which looks better?

Defintely the right-hand one. Not a fan of black pickguards.
