Les Paul Custom: what's the story?

I was listening to Rik Agnew playing with Christian Death, wondering why it reminded of Mick Mars on Too Fast for Love lp (the Roy Thomas Baker version.)

The only thing they had in common is the black LP custom: does something about that impart that woody crunch?

Then I started listing all the metal black LP custom players I could recall:

J Sykes, Euronymous, and thus Gorgoroth, Tribulation...

I forget who else, but I was wondering if the neck and / or body helps get that ax-like attack & unfriendly snarl...

Re: Les Paul Custom: what's the story?

I think it has more to do with the individual player. I've heard Robert Fripp with a black LPC playing some positively crushing music, and it sounds nothing like those guys.

Re: Les Paul Custom: what's the story?

Only two of those I am familiar with are Sykes and Mars and I can't see them sounding alike playing the same song on the same guitar. I wouldn't have a clue what guitar they were playing aside from probably the type of pickups. Maybe that says more about my ears ... or less about my ears. But I'm all for whatever motivates someone to have a NGD !!!

Re: Les Paul Custom: what's the story?

The late 70s construction seems to give some extra crunch, or bite, or similar due to the maple neck. Not every guitar is like that of course, but a good proportion of those who own LP's from this period report this trait

If I sound like Mick MArs - that guitar is going in the trash immediately!

And if ONLY a guitar could make me sound like Sykes….

... or, in my case, like Fripp. :)

As said here, the maple neck does give it alittle more snarl. (seems like the best adjective to use)

It's kind of like me when I bought my Les Paul and first plugged it into my little marshall. Did it make me sound like Jimmy Page? Yes and no. I can't think of any particular quality that would make a guitar like this one pictured sound any different than a similar les paul.
