Les Paul Deluxe

I still jones for a P-90 Les Paul. I am thinking about a 73 Deluxe a guy has offered me that still has the original mini-buckers. Just wondering if a set of P90's would retrofit without routing. Also if they do fit, is the hole larger and reqiures some kind of ring?

P-90's will fit but it will require some work...no routing but the Mini routs are deeper so you'll have to make some little blocks to raise the P-90's up higher...

And you might just be finding yourself falling in love with mini-buckers. They are a really cool sounding pickup!

Listen to Atlanta Rhythm Section's "Spooky" or "Champagne Jam". I think the guitarist is Barry Bailey. Great tone.

+1 .........I just got one yesterday (emptypockets' used rack) with the sole intent of putting Soaps in it.....but B-Bill is sooo right I'm in fallin in love w/ the minis ......damm, my P90 gas still there (weaker but still there):1:

Yeah - holes will be too deep. But that's a way easy issue compared to too shallow!

Everyone needs a P-90 guitar, they just don't know it!

Yeah, your jones for a P-90 LP is justified, but don't mess up a Deluxe to get it. Listen to Scott Gorham on the new Thin Lizzy live CD Still Dangerous. His LP Deluxe is just magical, and the perfect complement to Robertson's Black Beauty.

You need a P-90 LP AND and Deluxe.

As the night progressed last night....I slowly had that epipany.......but if I walk in my house anytime soon with with a "special" or a "gem" I'll be dodging frying pans fo' sho' ...... the gas for P90s continues.....but this deluxe has definitely givien me new "patience"

....oh yeah thanks for the Thin Lizzy tip I'll check it out ......

Jeez, Lucy. You already have three LPs. Get the Deluxe, keep the mini's, and then put some Phat Cats in one of your full 'bucker axes. That'll scratch the itch until the right super-duper, Lucid-approved deal on a P-90 Lester comes along.

Gotta Les Paul Jr. with a P90 in it for like $850 when the GAS gets too strong tho :smokin: hahaha

I had a '69 Deluxe Goldtop and switched to P-90's for a while. Great tone with either pup. I guess the routing was different with the early models, because I don't remember having trouble retro fitting......that is unless my memory isn't serving me very well:naughty: That's always a possibility after almost 40 years(LOL).

I love the mini bucker in my 73 Les Paul. It only has the neck mini, but it is one fantastic pickup. I also have the P90 neck in my 68 Epiphone Casino and it may be my favorite neck pickup in the world--with that mini bucker coming in second.

Gorham's being interviewing recently and he doesn't have fond memories of that Deluxe's tone. Not much positive to say about those mini-HB's.

+1. Especially if you already have a few guitars with HB's. Mix it up a little.

Listening to early Leslie West, Santana, Iommi, and Townsend ought to convince anyone about what P-90's can do.

The P90s should be mounted with screws through their coils into threaded metal inserts in the bottom of the pickup routs. Choosing a suitable length of height adjustment spring will correct for any differences in rout depth.

Personally, I would stick with the OEM mini-humbuckers.

There was a brief period in the Seventies when Gibson fitted cream plastic surrounds on LP Deluxes. Apparently, these were known to Gibson staff as "goof hiders". That is pretty much what they looked like. Terrible.

Scott's Deluxe had great tone, IMO- better than the bucker tones he got out his partsocaster during the Snowy White era, and then the full bucker Les Pauls he used the last couple years with sykes.

Robbos- deluxe on the other hand was incredible- Then again, everything robbo touches sounds great- he has stated he didn't care for his more famous LP Custom, but he still managed to get killer tone out of it. That said- he also butchere dhis Deluxe and ended up putting some original PAFs in it.

I had a horrible Norlin deluxe, and I've had a killer early 2Ks MF Deluxe that was def one of the top 5 (maybe top 3) LPs I've owned. They are like anything else-find a good one.
