Les Paul help

symptom

A friend of mine just bought an Epiphone Les Paul and, of course, he's thinking about changing pickups. He's no noob, but his main thing are strats. So, he asked me some help and I'm asking you guys.

Here's some information:

He's a vintage guy, and likes to play things like Clapton, Zeppelin, BB King and other things like that. Here are some characteristics that he expect from the pickups and what he's searching about tone:

Clean: clear, defined, rounded and fat
Crunch: Eric Clapton Bluesbreaker era style
Lead: Slash

I know he's asking for a lot of different things, but can you help me?

ps: He's open to magnet swapping and he's planning to buy a 335 style guitar which he will put a pair of seths in it. So, maybe he doesn't want to have 2 guitars with the same pickups.

Thank you!

Edit: The pickups have to be covered...

Re: Les Paul help

Duncan makes a variety of PAF's. '59N's can be bassy in LP's and 335's, so a PGN or A2PN would be good for a big sound. In the bridge I'd use a '59B with an UOA5 or an A2PB.

I have a pair of Seth's in a 335 Dot, and can highly recommend that combination.

Re: Les Paul help

All of those tones can be got with a low output PAF type humbucker: A2pro, pearly gates or Seth Lover. The amount of preamp drive will give you vintage or modern Marshall tones.

Re: Les Paul help

I agree. I find vintage output to medium output pickups the most versatile, since you can add all the gain you wanted later. They use to have more dynamics and definition note to note.
The stock '59N can sound a bit undefined and too boomy, once reached certain level of gain.

Re: Les Paul help

So, the suggestions until now are:

PGn/59UOA5 bridge
A2pro neck/59UOA5 bridge
A2pro neck/A2pro bridge
P-Rails with Triple shots

Knowing him, I know the P-Rails options is totally out of question. He really wants the classic covered humbucker look. A 59B with an A8 wouldn't be a good choice too?

Wo, Blue! You changed your avatar.

Is that one of your "pets"? You mentioned earlier that you raised tarantulas and snakes (cobras?).

Back in tarantulas after a long hiatus. Man, there's so many more species being bred in captivity now, from all kinds of remote locations. The hobby's exploded! It's amazing what's out there, and so many are colorful. Too much temptation for me. And so many people, male and female, are collecting them now. The one in my avatar is Poecilotheria tigrinawesseli, a large arboreal species from India.
