les paul medium output pickup recomendation

Hey,

i would like youre advise for my hagstrom super swede deluxe (les paul style guitar) i'm searching for new pickups (b&n). the guitar currently has the stock hagstrom 59's wich are not bad, but i want want something with a bit more output. i play mostly mainstream rock music but last year i'm playing more gainy stuff like think of tool, alice in chains,... so everything beyond metalica is a bitt to much.

for the bridge
i have a epiphone sg with duncan distortion, great for chugging but these feel like a one trick pony to me. I find these pickups are to compressed.
so based on this, for the bridge i am looking for somthing more versitale, open sounding and with less compression than the DD but with a bit more push than a 59

for the neck
i set the tone and gain for my amp according my brigde pickup, this results in een boomy sound on the neck pick up. the usable sounds are not really my playing style so i just don't use the neck
the only 2 sounds i like from neck humbuckers are these
1. super clean amp (but i don't like to use a clean sound on my amp, i use a crunch as clean sound)
2. for solo's past the 12th fret. (and i am not that much of a soloist)
the only neck pick up I use is the single coil neck from my strat
so is there humbucker pick-up that would not sound boomy in these circumstances so i could use it more? (i think a lower output pick up maybe but that pairs well with the brigde pick-up i'm loooking for)

Thx in advance

Welcome to the forum.

Just based off the pickups I have experience with, these are options i might recommend

Bridge
Seymour Duncan Custom 5
Seymour Duncan 59/Custom
Seymour Duncan Whole Lotta Humucker
Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates
Bare Knuckle Black Dog

Neck
Seymour Duncan Jazz
Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates
Seymour Duncan Whole Lotta Humucker

There are other pickups I don't have experience with that might be good as well, like
Full Shred neck, Perpetual Burn bridge, etc.

i have a pealy gates bridge in a strat and love it for that guitar but the output seems equal to my current 59. so this one is not an option because i allready have one and for this guitar i want a bit more output.
bkp black dog also has around the same output as my 59 i suspect.

Just put WLHs in my Epi Standard 60s LP. It was a toss up between those and a set of Saturday Night Specials. Those went in my Epi 58 Korina Flying V.

My SG has a 59/Custom in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck.

Very pleased with all of them.

Getting rid of the boom in the neck of a LP can be tricky. Try the screamin' demon in the neck. Or for PAF style an APH-1.

Bridge I expect to end up in the Duncan Custom or Custom-5 range.

Any thougts on what a phatcat would give in the neck? (I've never played p90s)

Isnt the whl in the same ballpark as my 59 or pg?

The WLH is a bit hotter than the other two, and the PG has an A2 magnet. They all have a similar EQ and are based on P.A.F. models. However, the 59 and the PG are based on a 50's pickup, whereas the WLH is based on a hot-rodded 70's P.A.F.. The WLH has more thump and low-end, a bit easier to get to grind or even chug if you need it.

My first thought is a Jazz for the neck, and 59/Custom Hybrid for the bridge. You get some push in the bridge without compression, a good clean sound, a great split sound (if you want that), and a PAF-style open EQ. The Jazz in the neck is clear, open, airy, and sounds great for solos above the 12th fret.

I really like the Gibson 498T in the bridge as far as mid-output bridge pickups go in Les Pauls. It's snarly, raspy and grindy. Lots of character!

I have not tried the Phatcat, but I can say the P-Rail has an authentic P90 tone. If you are wanting to try a P90. Put it in a Triple Shot ring and you will have 3 additional tones to play with.

The Phat Cat is a great alternative to an actual P90, though it is single coil, so it will hum. If you were going that route, I'd suggest a P-Rail too, so you can have a good P90 sound plus some cool bonus sounds.

Don't overlook the Perpetual Burn for bridge position. Clear, open character, yet still drives an amp nicely.
Enough beef to chunk. Enough mids for singing leads. And plenty of highs to cut and sparkle.

IMO "versatile, open sounding, less compressed than a Distortion but more push than a 59" describes it to a T.

Full shred neck is usually overlooked but is a great option for cases like this. Seems like just about every other option for the bridge has been covered.

Thx all for your input, still have some option paralysis concerning the bridge pickup ill need to research these before making a perchase
59 custom
Custom 5
Custom
Perpetual burn
Bkp emerald
Bkp true grid

The neck will most likely end up to be a jazz.
