Hell No! Let's go with tone and forget the vanity.

Re: Les Paul- pickup covers or not??

I think they can look good with covers, or with open coils, but they look way better with the covers IMO.

Here is my '04 Standard after first installing the pick guard. (That model year did not come with a guard.)

Very nice...Is it actually a cream color in the middle of the finish,or did it fade to that? Either way I Like it.The covers look great on your's also!

It's white blonde in the middle and tan on the outside. The white blonde is slightly yellowish pink because of the naturally yellowish maple showing through, but the lacquer itself is just white blonde, like an old Strat or Tele looked like when it was brand new. The back and the neck are just straight clear coats, so mahogany colored.

Nickel covers on everything that isn't a superstrat. If there's an exception made, it'll usually be zebra. For some reason, I'm not into the double black look, unless it really suits the guitar better than everything else.

I prefer the WD style open-face humbucker covers, also known as "pickup beauty rings". They offer the physical and EMI RFI interference protection, a finished look, but still have the clarity of uncovered pups.

I really like the way my SG looks with both double cremes also..

It really depends on the specific LP, and the look you're going for.

I think most LP's can look equally good with or without covers, especially with black or zebra pickups. I almost always prefer uncovered pickups on non-traditional finishes (e.g. blue burst) and covered on the more standard Les Paul finishes, but in most cases either is fine.

The exceptions to this are the Customs and similar, which IMO absolutely must have gold covers to look "right". Generally, any LP with gold hardware needs gold covers.

The nicest looking Les Paul I ever saw was wine red with zebras. Super sexy.

Those trim rings are great.

Here they are with a double black 500/496 set:

...and with a double cream Super Distortion set:

Re: Les Paul- pickup covers or not??

Sorry, Mr. Vanity, that one would look better with covers.
Mr. vanity says: I just watched and listened to Mick Ronson on YouTube playing live with David Bowie on "Moonage Daydream" (Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars) with uncovered coils and the tone outweighs the sparkley factor any and everyday of the week. I am a tone monkey and I cannot just play a guitar 'cause it is pretty. It better sound excellent or put the thing back down. I have heavily modded my guitar with Seymour Duncan '59 and JB Model pickups, a Wilkinson brass roller bridge, a brass stop tailpiece and TonePros locking studs. My Les Paul has been greatly improved in tone, I care less about WOW factor. I still favor uncovered coils and to each their own.
