Les paul pickup suggestions please

Im pretty sure im getting a les paul now, and as such will eventually replace the pickups when i get some more money. But to what?

I want a tonal range somewhere between slash and billy gibbons, for both clean and distorted.

Ill be going through my ENGL and my mesa 50cal.

Its a les paul standard too.

Fire away :D

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I'd say comapre the Pearly Gates and the Alnico Pro 2s. I personally have a PG set with nickle covers and love 'em!

Maybe you'll like the stock pickups? No? Slash is all about the A2 Humbucker and I agree with the PG or the 59 pickup...

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I'd say a PG neck with a Demon Bridge. PG neck cause they just sound best in a Gibson, especially a Paul. Demon bridge cause I feel the Demon is the burly kick a$$ older brother of the PG.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

For a little more output, you might check out a CC or C-5 for the bridge.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Just a couple of points to ponder Slash uses standard Gibson P/up's through a signature Marshall. Billy's p/up's are what the Pearly Gates were based on or so I think from when his main axe was a 59 or 60 Les Paul. If I'm wrong someone will Put me Right. So I'd look at the PG' & the 59's with maybe the PG in the neck Also the JB/PG combo would give a little more bite at the bridge :dunno:

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

well how about an A2Pro in the neck like slash uses and a PG or CC bridge.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Actually, Slash has used a set of Alnico II Pro's in his Les Paul's for a while. I like this pickup in the neck, and maybe a Rio Grande BBQ in the bridge.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I was actually thinking about an AP2 or PG in the neck, how would you say these are different?

Also ive heard a lot of people say how AP2's in the bridge can get a little thin, is this true cos slash uses them in the bridge?

Ok..I'll be the one to correct you;). Slash uses Alnico II Pros in his Les Pauls.:)

To answer the main question....if you want something between Slash and Billy Gibbons your best bet is probably a PG/Alnico II Pro set.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I've seen people rant and rave about a set of Seth Lovers in a Les Paul.

Coincidently, this is what I'm trying in my LP Standard :)

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Custom 5/59N in nickel covered. Or Seth set, JB/Jazz, or ....nah, C-5/Jazz. The best.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

The neck must certainly be an antiquity HB! :D

If you need the uppermid scream(nasal honk or texas sizzle if you will) of Gibbon's tone get yourself a PGb. If it's not too important, ant bridges rule. But they don't have that uppermid scream.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Im pretty certain i dont want a c5, all the clips ive head of it i havent liked.

I was however considering a JB in the bridge, as of the last few hours, or at least something a bit hotter than a PG but without going ceramic. I really love my JB in my jackson, but thats alder. How are they in les pauls?

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

i love the C5/Jazz set, but your rig really is a factor with the C5 as it can be a little thin in some situations, but i like the 59/jazz and 59/59 sets as well

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Well my rig isnt thin, being an ENGL Savage 120, but im pretty sure i dont want a c5. I want a bridge pickup thats pretty damn rockin and thick, but without being really metal. Im actually thinking a JB wouldnt be a bad idea now, although ive already got one in my jackson. Trouble is, i absolutely love it! Should i try something else like a CC perhaps?

IMO if you want a tone between Slash and Gibbons go with a Seth Lover. The Seth is much better at the ZZ Top tone than the PG.
