It's kinda hard to read that article unless I turn my monitor on it's side...lol

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I Know but I can't get it on to the site the right way without making it too small to read, you were right about the p/up's but he's added an Fishman Powerbridge for acoustic sounds

The Seth is much better at the ZZ Top tone than the PG.

I wouldn't think so, I haven't got any experience with the PG other than a used LP that I tried out when I was starting to get into tones. But isn't the PG modeled after billy gibbons pups, plus I'm sure almost everyone in here will say "think billy gibbons" when you talk about the PG. I'm not saying your wrong, but that's the first I've heard someone prefer something other than a PG for ZZ Top tone.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

There's a lot of LP players on this forum who really dig the C-5 in Pauls. The tight bottom end is the first thing you notice. Since you have a good amp, the C-5 will let it shine through. The CC and JB will add more of their own character, but are my other two favorite LP bridge pickups. The reason some might opt for a Jazz neck is because they still have plenty of output for soloing, but sound great for clean rhythm, too. I'm digging my new Seth neck with a C-5 bridge in my honeyflame Paul.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I just replaced the JB in my LP with a nickel covered C5 (thanks Lew). GJ is right, the bass is strong, but not overpowering or loose/flabby/muddy. I find the tone to be much more clear than the JB, like the JB is a glass of water you just filled from the tap that is a little cloudy and the C5 is straight up spring water. :bigthumb:

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I think i want an alnico pro 2 for the neck, just because slash's neck tones are along the lines of what i want from my neck. But im still open to suggestions, i am thinking about a seth or a jazz, but i will be using it under some high gain sometimes and i seem to remember people saying the jazz wasnt the best high gain pickup.

And for the bridge, i do want something that wont just be a pure pickup, but that will ROCK! Im not fussed about letting the true colours of the guitar shine through so much as i want awesome tone. Hence why im thinking more about a JB or CC than a C5.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I will no doubt replace the pickups, but i am interested to see how the stock burst buckers go cos ive heard great things about them compared to other gibson pickups.

The website doesnt specify which burst buckers come with their standards, they just say "alnico V burstbuckers", they dont say if its a "1" or "2" or "3". Does anyone know which it is?

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

i have a custom 5 in the bridge position and a 59 in the neck of my les paul and it is FN AWSOME!

I have a Rio Grande BBQ in the bridge of my LP Std. and it rules. It's a great, kick-ass pickup with just the right amount of bite. Sweet mids, tight bottom and rolled-off highs.

It sounds amazing through my Powerball and I'm sure it would sound just as good through your Savage :headbang:

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Ya gotta remember, Billy Gibbons didn't use a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates pickup. He used an Original 1959 Gibson PAF. So........think " what gets me closest to a 59 PAF??? ". Answer > Seth or 59B. I have a 1959 and a 1960 Les Paul, with the Original PAF's in em. I"ve also had newer LP's with Pearly Gates in em. I got rid of the PG's. Too Bright. Now, there were tonal differences from pickup to pickup back in the 50's, and Billy's were kinda unique, to say the least. His LP that he nicknamed "Pearly Gates" had a little hotter sound than others, probably due to unbalanced coils. Mine are a little sweeter, but if I Lean on em, They can get pretty Nasty. I've yet to find any other pickup that sounds EXACTLY Like a 59 or 60 PAF, but I think the Seth or 59B comes the closest. You also have to figure in what kind of amp he was using ( Plexi ), and his own personal technique, etc... .....:)

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Here, from Gibson's site:

"BurstBucker Pro™ humbuckers are offered in a calibrated pair; the neck position (IM59A), and the bridge position (IM59B). Output of these pickups is similar to the standard BurstBucker™ #1 and #2 model. "

Of course, the #1 & #2 have an A2 magnet instead of an A5. I had a pair of them first in an Epi Dot (great - bright maple guitar) and then in an Epi LP Custom (bridge good, neck dark and muddy). Maybe the A5 pro are better. If the bridge sounds like a C5 with more mids, it most be cool. The #1 is said to be underwound, and is therefore weak and lifeless IMO.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Ive heard great things about the burstbucker pro humbuckers that come in a calibrated pair, havent heard that the neck is weak though, but have heard that the BB1 which is underwound is weak. Ill have to see.

Im sure ill be able to find a few duncans willing to take the burstbuckers spots if need be ;)

Hi mate. I know a guy in Melbourne (Tony Imrek) - well, he's in Malaysia at the moment, but Melbourne again soon. Heard some of his soundfiles through a crappy AVT Marshall with a Les Pual with a 59N and AP@ bridge. Great sound - even with an AVT! I reckon his sound is what you're after. I can give you his email and put you in touch with him, if you like?

I personally go A2p in both, but that's me...If it were me, from what you've said, I'd go PGn and Ap2b, but the 59n and Ap2 works really well for Tony...

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Ive actually given a lot of thought to an A2P set, i love the neck A2P in pauls ala slash (love his neck tone) and also love his bridge tone actually, and i really like some of the cleans ive heard him pull with the bridge A2P in his pauls (still talking about slash). Ive heard a lot of people diss the bridge A2P bridge so its good to hear a positive experience with it.

Yeah PM me his email if you can, ill drop him a line about it. Thanks :D

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Too easy. I'll do it sometime soon. The good thing if you get a AP2 set, is that iof you like the neck, but not the bridge, you can pretty much use the bridge pup as a neck in another guitar anyway (since it's so low output...)

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

I recommend a JB in the bridge and a '59 or Jazz in the neck. This is a very versatile combo. :burnout:

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

Angus, If you have a powerful enough Amp, go with the Alnico 2. That thing has some tone to it. I'm considering a SH-5 Custom in the bridge and an Alnico 2 in the neck in a Les Paul for myself.

Re: Les paul pickup suggestions please

FYI, BB1 is not weak. I have two out of gibson historics, one reads 7.65K and the other 7.80K. In fact many PGn's read less than 7.40K ;)
