Les Paul Players, quick question!!

How often do you use the tone controls on your paul, and if so, which one do you use the most, neck or bridge? How many of you think they're completely useless?

also,
how much would you pay for an early 90's Gibson Les Paul Studio with no finish and no Hardware?

I'm thinking about getting a les Paul, and I'm not sure I'll even use 2 knobs, let alone 4, so I might replace some pots with a midbooster or something.

I use the tone knobs for both pickups, but more so with the bridge pickup to tame brightness.

As far as a 90's LP Studio with no finish and no hardware, probably in the neighborhood of $500-600 off the top of my head.

I use em constantly....especially with the 50's wiring you can get like A Million different tones out of them:D

Yep, thats how mine are wired as well.

They are CRUCIAL if you are going to use the both-pup-on tones. And I mostly use the neck tone. But I might use anything, or go for a while in ALL-ON-10 mode. Depends on what I'm playing and which guitar.

All the time, I use them both a good bit but more than likely the bridge most

Early 90s Paul that's all stripped down?

I dunno, but "not much" sounds right.

$300?

I bought an '86 custom shop edition Melody Maker in similar shape (neck finish intact!) for just under $200 with a hardcase.

YMMV.

If there's been no hardware on the guitar for a while you should make sure the neck hasn't committed the pretzel act before purchase.

A critical "mistake" with the Melody Maker... still pretty gnarly for slide but it'd be more kick-ass if it was usable for "standard" playing.

edit ~ I forgot to mention that the hard case was the NASTIEST smelling case I've ever encountered!!! Came with a Hamer case that I think had been through a flood... the red plush was sticking to the guitar!!! ick. It was sooooo foul...

I ride the tones & volumes on all my Gibby style axes pretty much constantly.

300 USD sounds about right for a stripped Studio.

+1!!! I dont ride the control on my other guitars as much though. I still do but, I tend to run them more wide open. On a LP, I am all over the tone controls.

I use the neck tone more often than the bridge tone. The bridge tone is almost always on 10.

For a stripped LP studio? I'd say $300 tops.

depends on what you are playing and how hard your picking,the tone knob is there for a reason ,i used to just leavem cranked all the way and do my tone frome my amp then i started playing around with the tone knobs and yea there like a built in toy for yer guitar,and ya gotta tweakem for volume swells.raven

I'm on my tone controls a lot. Especially for the bridge pup.

What I'll do is turn the tone down to about 5, then I'll get my amp set up where I like it. From there I can adjust if I need more or less treble depending on the song or venue.

Even when they're on 10, tone knobs are in use. They still leak away some treble so if you cut them out entirely, you may find the tone is suddenly to bright and harsh.

As for me, I use the tone control a lot on the neck pu, occasionally on the bridge. And by "use" of course I mean I roll it back some.

I also recommend the Kinman mod for both volume pots.

I've always kept the tone controls full up, but have begun discovering some real nice variations when messing with the controls.

I rarely fondle the tone control on the neck pickup on a Les Paul, but I do ride the volume control. I'm more likely to roll back the tone on the bridge a hair on bright amps.

I disconnect the tone on my bridge pickups. The neck tone I use quite a bit...

I'd prefer a stripped down Paul if I could get it for cheap= maybe $300. Put some locking tuners in, tone pros bridge, all new electronics, tru oil finish... alot depends on what shape the frets are in

Ditto, I never used the tone control for the bridge so I unhooked it. Brighter this way? Little to none.......I use the tone on the neck rarely, but it's there when I need it!

Like John Petrucci, I never use my tone knobs. Full up always. I work both volume knobs heavily. That's how I get my tone changes. I use 7K to 9K pickups, so when I hit the volume knobs, I can get crystal clear, to moderate breakup, to full onslaught. I can't imagine wanting the tone any darker. I like to be heard.

I use both tone knobs constantly. But, the band I'm in plays a very wide variety of music genres: Country, Rock, Pop, Blues, Jazz--you name it, we play it.
