Les Paul Studio vs SG?

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

Play both and go with what feels right.

Advantages and disadvantages can be listed for both.

I tend to play more raunchy on a SG than a Les Paul...might be a mental thing trying to channel Angus Young lol (I feel the same way about a Tele compared to a Strat.)

Both can be tweaked to suit your needs.

I think I know what you mean. When I play me SG, I spank it way harder than my Les Paul. Same thing when I had a tele. Also, The SG is way brighter and louder sounding when unplugged. It is also stiffer to play. Aaaand I'm still trying to find the right pickups to put in it.

This could go on all day...

I agree. But the point was that it's stupid to use one artist's preference as a reason to not use a specific guitar, unless the OP was interested in getting that artist's tone. Tony Iommi is so associated with the SG that if the OP was after his tone, I highly doubt that he would have asked this question.

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I like the neck pickup sound on an LP better. I like the weight of an SG. I like an LP's balance better (no neck dive). I remember in the late 80's/90s they came out with an LP 'Lite' that used balsa wood and a thinner body. That was a cool guitar, except you are paying top dollar for...balsa wood.

Who the **** is Yngwie Malmsteen?

He's a Swedish shredder guitarist. He's pretty well known for his use of a Fender Strat with a scalloped fretboard, although in his earlier days he used guitars from Aria as well as Gibson Flying V's (in contrast to Tony Iommi, who gained fame using a Gibson SG after the neck pickup of his Strat malfunctioned while recording). He even has a set of signature Seymour Duncan pickups.

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I've used both an SG and an LP , so id say jackson or fender superstrat.. LOL

still own an 1985 SG, but its never played... Really wish i had the LP still though... So if id have to pick between the 2, i will go with LP

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I think SGs are Gibson's best value guitar. For less than some studios, you can get an SG standard with neck binding, nice inlays, two-humbucker/4 knob config. I think there's about a 20% uncharge on anything that says "Les Paul" (I own two, btw, and no SGs. don't know why, more used LPs around, I guess)

You could always get a used SGJ, the sorta budget model from a couple years back, and see if the design suits your needs. I see them used up here for 3-400 CDN.

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I don't like SG's for some reason, the way they play and set up feels weird to me. I've had to use one on recordings in the past but live I can't get on with them! I don't know what it is but I just don't like it!

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I play metal, hard rock and classic rock. I'm leaning towards the SG because it seems to be a lighter, double-cut, brighter LP, which is a good thing. Are there any advantages of an LP?

Listen to Clapton and how he made the SG sound. Les Paul weighs to much and is at it's best clean. If your going to be primarily playing in distortion mode go for the SG.

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

No one has ever played Metal, Hard Rock, or Classic Rock on an SG or a Les Paul. They all used a Gretsch.

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I think it is more a question of ergonomics. They both feel and hang on your body very differently. You can get them to sound very similar. The balance is way different between them, too.

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

Best solution is to get one of each haha. That's what I did. I think your best bet is just to try a bunch of both and find one that speaks to you. I've played Gibson and epi models of both that I loved and some I didn't particularly care for.

In my case I play the SG more. Both my Les Paul Trad and SG sound fantastic imo, and both are quite full sounding albeit different. I dont find the SG to sound substantially thinner or lacking in anyway compared to the LP. I find I like the ergonomics of the SG more and that's why I reach for it more often. I haven't had any neck dive issues either.

i like the sg
i don't like the lp except the sound and it's a bad thing
not to have the possibility to play as good as a sg or PRS

the solution? a custom made
or a double cutaway LP

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

Get to a store and play each one. I really like the idea of the SG, but where the neck meets the body is super weird and uncomfortable to me. If you're used to Fender style guitars, you'll probably find the SG has your left arm much further our and the bridge much further in to the body.

That feel might be right up your alley. But nothing really feels like an SG but an SG, so definitely try playing one in the store for a bit. Ask them to put a strap on it for you and see how it feels standing up (most customers that come through my shop never ask for this and therefore buy a guitar without ever seeing how it feels standing up).

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

Switching from lps to SGs is a bit like driving a different kind of car. It doesn't take long to get used to it, even though it feels strange at first. Play it for about an hour with a strap and you'll be fine.

Re: Les Paul Studio vs SG?

I'm a bit biased as an SG owner, but I feel the upper fret access and lighter weight make it worth it by themselves over any other difference. Plus the SGs are far cheaper.
