Les Paul vs SG

Yep what do you prefer? A Les Paul or a SG?
If you own both which one gets most of the attention?

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I'd choose the LP. I love the SG, but I'm a big guy, so the SG looks like a toy on me. Don't own one, but I do like them.

Tougher choice for me is LP vs. 335.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

SG. More comfortable for daily/frequent playing. Gibsons answer to a Strat in terms of ergonomics and comfort. But I prefer/love my Les Pauls more.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Les Paul. I dig the tone and aesthetics more, and I usually find SGs to be unforgivably neck-heavy.

That said, it is still an unmistakably cool axe.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I’ve owned up to 4 Les Pauls at the same time and the feeling, shape and ergonomics are great in my opinion. I’ve tried a couple of SGs and they are neck heavy, too thin for my taste and I don’t like how the controls, switch and jack are all in the same place. But they look pretty cool too, specially the big “batwing” pick-guard.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I have both & switch back and forth playing them, both are comfortable, and weight or neck-dive aren't a problem for me. Full neck access is the ultimate on SG's, but I do like the tones of LP's best.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I prefer the look and feel of a Les Paul. However, I have had long simmering gas for a Heritage Cherry SG standard with the big pickguard. One day I'll find a great deal on one and scratch that itch. I need to find my "forever" Les Paul first. I'm working on that now.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

The ergonomics of both are pretty terrible for me, but if I had to choose, I'd go LP..the balance is better, and I can always sit down.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

SG all the way. LP's are incredibly over-rated for what they actually offer in a guitar (besides a pretty flame top).

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I have a ‘62 Les Paul, so... both :)

Very nice. I bet that thing is sweet. I'd love to have a 66' SG, for the year I was born. I just don't want to pay the prices being asked for them. I can't justify $5000 to $9000+ for an SG.

Agreed about the ergo issues of both, but if I had to choose it'd be SG. BUT once I had a Les Paul "The Paul II" which had a tummy cut and thinner body for better access. Made the situation somewhat better.

You can get an 66 Epiphone SG. Sweet rig

It is. Killer neck profile, it weighs nothing but balances well, the PAFs sound just like you'd expect, it smells really cool, pretty much all the wood it's made from is illegal now... what's not to love? :)

Oh yeah, the stupid tremolo, that's what. Despite it's uselessness, at least it's the cool ebony block tailpiece version.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Own both and prefer the SG for the larger tonal palette as well as the better ergonomics and upper fret access.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I prefer the sound of an LP but I like the way a good 60's style SG feels better. Just as long as it's not neck-heavy.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Disclaimer: I'm leaning towards preferring semi hollow Gibsons more than solid bodies.

I like how SGs look and sound, but I've seen bad breaks on them. They just seem iffy to me now. Some LPs look cheesy or weigh a ton, but the right one feels like a million bucks in your hands. Can't put a price on that smile. LP for me.

I don't like the tone of a LP better than a SG.
I don't like the tone of a SG better than a Strat.
I don't like the tone of a Strat better than a 335.
I don't like the tone of a 335 better than a Tele.
I don't like the tone of a Tele better than a LP.

I love the tone of all of them. They are just different. And that's why I love them all and why I have so many guitars.

I currently have 4 SGs and 2 Wilshires and will choose Wilshire over SG hands down, any day of the week and twice on Sunday. My biggest complaints about SG are the neck dive and jack placement. I've cured the neck dive to some extent, but not completely, on one of my SGs by placing the straplock on the tip of the upper horn.

As far as the weight and ergonomics issues of LP vs SG...that's why most of my LP type builds are chambered and have belly cuts (a couple are also thinner than a typical LP).

Problem solved!

So my choice without question would be my custom build LP...best of both worlds. I DO have to say, however, that one of the "best" tones (meaning mellow, rich and full, huge sustain, with just the right amount of crispness) is from a solid, thick, 11 pound LP! Too heavy for me to gig with.
