Les Paul vs SG

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Great example... Buddy had one and you are absolutely right.

Actually, I need to correct myself. The model number at the time was an Artist 2617. The AR### numbers I believe are reissues?

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I have an SG and three Les Pauls I love them all for different reasons. However, my Les Paul Traditional is my No. 1 axe. I also have a Les Paul Custom Lite which is the best of both worlds. A Lester the thickness of an SG.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I have to say I like the neck pickup sound on an LP a lot better than the neck pickup on an SG...I think it is the distance from the bridge.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Man as soon as I put down my Les Paul and pickup the SG, I love the SG. When I put down the SG and pickup the Les Paul, I love the Les Paul. First world problem.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

It's not an either/or situation for me. I like both.

I do have more LPs than SGs. That's largely because the SG I have is so untouchable that any other SG I've ever owned or considered was either inferior or redundant. With the SG, it feels like that one guitar covers it for me. With Pauls, I like having a handful of different types (Standard, Custom, Junior, Special).

I think of the SG as a variant of Les Paul anyhow. It's basically an evolved Les Paul Special double cut. Take a Special double cut, slim it down, carve it into a more wicked shape, replace the single coils with humbuckers, and add a vibrato: SG.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

The big minus for me on the SG is the long neck. When I’m jammin chords on the first 3 frets I feel like my arms is far out from my body. The Les Paul hangs perfect on my body and my left arm is relaxed as I jam chords. Of course upper fret access on the LP isn’t great.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Two weeks ago I would have said a les Paul but then I bought my Sg... super light, great upper fret access and sounds amazing. Doesn’t kill my back after 3 hour shows either.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I grab my SG most of the time. It ROCKS with the Whole Lotta Humbucker bridge installed.

I love your enthusiasm, and have to admit I'm more energized by my SG.... Like a Strat, you gotta keep things moving, riffing and rhythm and it's fun live...

I move less with Les Paul's and high sustain guitars... More focused on thinking out the path around sustained leads.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Remember the Les Paul killer...the Yamaha SG-2000 which Carlos Santana made famous? It's a pretty cool looking guitar with the best of both worlds of an SG & an LP.

Hilarious

Just put down my LP and wonder why I would ever play a different guitar. For me, the LP just holds perfect. Great tone and I can dance around like Jimmy Page with it lol.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

LP all the way.

I'd rather have a body that's heavier than the neck than a neck that's heavier than the body lol!

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I don't think SG neck dive is due to weight nearly as much as it is due to poor strap pin placement. I've relocated the pin on my Epi SG-400 and it fixed the problem. The new HP-II SGs have the pin on the back of the left horn and that kinda fixes the problem.

Oh yeah I know, but still...whenever I hold an SG it feels like I'm holding a cricket bat attached to a dinner plate.

Love the look though. But much prefer my Viper :fing2:

Re: Les Paul vs SG

For a "best of both worlds" feel I grab an El Diablo SG, it has master controls, a thicker body, and is the only permanent cure for erectile dysfunction.
