Les Paul vs SG

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I love Les Pauls, for all the usual reasons, but SG’s are scrappy — they’re down to fightin’ weight.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Not to hijack the thread, but what do you think of the PRS Mira as an SG substitute? The Mira is the one PRS that catches my eye. What do you think?

One thing that I do not like about SGs (and this goes for Firebirds, too) is that the volume and tone knobs are too close together.

I would look at a Guild S100 for a SG substitute.

The ESP Viper is my preferred SG substitute. The Warmoth Diamondback is a good option if you are into the design, but don't like any of ESP's specifications.

Mine too, but moreso for a modern substitute. For a classic style substitute I like the Guild S100.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

I’ve read many pages online in regards to the SG vs LP debate. Some people claim the SG has a bigger tonal palate. I’m just not hearing that when I test the two against each other. The SG is more focused while the LP has a wider tone spectrum IMO.

I think they are equally as versatile, but in slightly different ways.

Bingo... As earlier poster noted that this is a first world question... Either can do almost anything, but great stable mates if you can afford both.

Re: Les Paul vs SG

Well, I currently own 8 Les Pauls, and 1 SG, so it would seem I prefer the LP! As a kid, the Les Paul was the first electric guitar I longed for, and when I eventually worked and saved long enough to get one, I was one happy dude. I am sure it contributed to the chiropractic problems I experienced in my 30s, but I built a guitar strap that went over both shoulders and that cured the pain.

I always had a problem with neck dive on SGs but I did round off the top horn of my SG, put the Strap Lock button there and fixed that concern. My SG is a great player, but for playing live I usually take a couple of Les Pauls with me.
