i think the ESP copies are better quality anyways, and the dean goldtop LP copy, well, I actually didn't think it was a bad guitar, and i usually hate everything remotely gibson

There are a lot of different models out there but yeah I agree, too much $$$. It's part of the marketting.

Gibson's CEO, Henry Juszkiewicz, even said in an interview that he will charge as much as he can for Gibson products as long as people keep buying them.
And yes, I think $2,000 for a standard and over $3,000 for a custom (which is really not a custom at all, just a fancy production model really) is ridiculous.

Agreed 100%. I love Gibson Les Pauls. I have owned four over the last 14 years and will continue to buy them - new and used.
If you think they are overpriced, head to E-bay and look for a sleeper. You used to be able to get an '02 R8 (used) in the $2,200 - $2,500 price range. They have phenomenal tops and play very well.
I also agree that their are other guitars that get close to the Les Paul tone, but nothing is quite like a nice Lester. That said, there is a reason that Warren Haynes plays Les Pauls and not the knockoff brands - there is nothing like the real deal.

Absolutely. I love the lawsuit stuff but there's nothing quite like a nice Gibson. I think a used R7 is one of the best deals going. The market for Gibson's higher priced guitars probably has things in common with that of Harley Davidson; guys in their thirties and up who don't want to settle.

they are way over priced, but people keep buying them. If there was a cheaper alternative then maybe it could get some of the market share, but they sue anyone who even remotely comes close to a les paul design. they have cornered the market and now we all pay for it.
I have to admit that i love the sound of a good les paul, but i didn't want to pay over 3000 for a custom or worse yet even more on a historic reissue so Aaron is building one of his single cut aways for me. it may not look like the gibsons but it also puts them to shame construction wise. I also got to take the features i like best and put them on a guitar instead of settling for what gibson used to do.
The single cut Aaron is making for me has an oxblood finish and p90 pickups, all mahogany (the same wood gibson is using on the historic reissues), and ebony board and small pearl inlays (cause i never liked the big blocks on gibson les pauls) a wrap around bridge and only one volume and one tone knob. plus we added features like a pushpul tone pot and a kill switch.
I know with this guitar i will have a one of a kind instrument made only for me and i get to see what happens along the way. I get to deal with a great guy and a fantastic product. What would i have gotten if i went with a gibson, i would have been dealing with a guy at guitar center, i would have payed well over 3000 and still had to replace a switch, pots, caps, drill through the top for a kill switch and i would have been replacing the pickups too.
So you guys decide, Lew suggested Hamer as a good alternative, they already come with duncan pickups and used they are a steal. I know some other high priced custom builders that make gibson style guitars like Thorn, which blow gibson away. Who are the other makers that can produce a better product with a cheaper price.
I personally think lew hit the nail on the head when he said hamer, very good quality guitars cheaper pricing and actually very nice people to deal with too. I would have said guild if they still made the bluesbird. I think mine is better than most any gibson i have played.

I've got to say that my Hamer Monoco Super Pro is a nicer playing, nicer sounding guitar than any Les Paul I've owned in the last 30 years. And it only cost me $1300 used. I think Falstaff's analogy comparing a Gibson to a Harley is right on. I think Gibson's are way, way overpriced and not only that, most of them don't play or sound all that great. You're paying triple what the guitar is worth just for the name GIBSON LES PAUL on the headstock. Lew

That said I think it's about guys in their thirties too. If a Gibson is all you've known why would you change?
My dad is 47 with a 69 LP and he was completely confused why I was even CONSIDERING a heritage...a (knockoff) made in the OLD GIBSON plan by the OLD GIBSON employees. Then he saw one and played it and said that was probably the smartest $800 I'd spent on a guitar. His only issue is "it still doesn't say gibson on the headstock" I told him "that's fine" with me because I know its history. Every true blue Gibson guy who has laid hands on my 150 has been in awe of it. In the end it's all about the name, and that's cool with me.
